Another first-world problem: losing a security badge

My morning routine was disrupted when I reached for my work ID badge and found that it wasn't there. I spent about 10 minutes searching everywhere I could imagine I would have put it. Of course, I didn't find it because it was sitting in a jar full of lost badges in the lost-and-found area at work. I was lucky in that regard, although I had to ride public transportation to work (instead of the company shuttle) and I had to wait a few minutes for the building doors to unlock. Also, there was the worry about having to get the badge and my work-supplied bus pass (which was with it) replaced.

If I hadn't recovered it, it would have been the second-worst thing to happen to me all year, behind the (expected) death of one of my relatives this summer. Even with finding it, it may still be in second place. I can't count the six months of being unemployed as one event, but I'm pretty sure there were one or two rejections in that period which may edge this event in badness. At any rate, considering how much worse many other people have it, I've had a very good year.

I hope all of you had a happy Thanksgiving

Mine was pretty good. It's nice to visit my family. Taking a ZipCar reminded me that I really don't like driving. Also, it looks like I'll end the month at 215 pounds. Not too good. Admittedly, Thanksgiving day and the following Friday added five pounds to my body, but I had about a week of overeating before that which kept me stuck at 210. Well, for December, I'll aim for 195. It'll be hard during the last week of the year, but hopefully I can focus on the first three weeks of the month.

I'm still wrestling with my new device. I just added a free app which adds more camera features, but it appears to also add advertising. I'm not sure I like that. It's also hard to position this camera. At some point, I'll have to device some sort of container which can hold it upright. Leaning the phone against things tends to cause random inputs to occur on the touch screen.

Stupid First-World Problems

I got my new smartphone. I haven't started the phone service part of it yet, as I want to use up my time and minutes on my old phone. But as you can see, it takes pictures of much higher quality than my previous camera. However, it doesn't seem to have a timer feature. That makes it really hard for me to take photos of myself. I'm also wrestling with trying to get music on it, and after that I have to figure out how to get my video game lists off of my old Palm and onto it.

Also, I've finally tossed out Clear as my internet provider. I'm now using a service that costs 1/3 more ($60 instead of $45) but promises much higher up time, 100 Mbps, and no throttling. I am having a problem with it, as NFL Game Rewind now thinks I'm out of the country. I hope to get that fixed today.

The Sites Are Exceedingly Flaky Today

We all know that the performance of this site is mediocre at best. However, I've had more problems than usual this past week or so. Today was exceptionally so.

I had received a page on VisionPersonals.com from a transgender who said that she had sent me an e-mail. She went on to say that she was setting up a three-or-more-some with a woman friend of hers and wanted to invite me. Now, I'm not sure if I'd want to go or not. However, I haven't seen the e-mail. Furthermore, the instant messenger kicked me off, and apparently kicked her off as well. When I came back, I tried to page twice, but received no response.

I have almost never receive responses on pages, even when I send them to people whom I've chatted with. Am I supposed to believe that all of these people simply don't want to talk to me anymore? Even if they page me later? Or are my pages falling into a black hole? How would I know? The instant messenger certainly doesn't warn me when it decides to stop broadcasting my camera. Or, like today, when it decides it just doesn't want my name on the list of active chatters anymore.

By the way, I hope this picture (which I took on Saturday) will be the last one with this crappy Vivitar camera. I've ordered a relatively-basic smartphone that has what I hope will be at least a decent camera. I expect to be taking pictures with that in the future. It should arrive tomorrow, although I might not be around to sign for it, so maybe I won't actually get it for a few days. I should get it in time for some pictures this weekend. If it takes good shots, I'll be rotating them into my profile pictures, most of which are now several years old.

P.S. It's still funny that the word VisionPersonals.com is not in the blog editor's spellchecker dictionary.

Third notch

Yes, this is another weight-loss update.

The pants I'm wearing in this picture have a 36" waist. They fit okay, although they are a little binding around the waist. However, I had no problem wearing them while going out for walks yesterday. Also, I'm up to the third notch on my belt.

I've been hovering around 210 pounds for the past four days now. However, I've stayed on diet and have been exercising well. I think the only thing that could keep me from hitting 200 this month is Thanksgiving dinner (and leftovers).

Misadventures in phone shopping

Well, the punchline of this story is that cell phone plans are expensive and don't do everything I want.

I've been living without a smartphone for, well, ever. I have a dumb cell phone with TracFone service for the few phone calls I receive. I don't have a landline. I have a three-year-old iPod shuffle whose battery life is starting to decline. I have an eight-year-old Palm PDA that keeps the list of video games that I own, so I avoid buying duplicates when I'm shopping in thrift stores for games I don't own. And I use Clear for my internet access.

I was thinking maybe I could get a new phone and service that would replace all of these things. The big trip-up, which is very carefully hidden by the phone service providers, is that their "unlimited" data plans (for those providers who have one) do not include tethering (attaching another device, like a PC, to the phone for Internet access) or devices connected to the phone's mobile hotspot. They have limits on the data you can download through the phone to other devices in those ways, and many don't even support tethering.

I download and upload a lot of data. As I write this, I'm watching the Rams/Colts game via NFL Game Rewind and I'm broadcasting my webcam on Alt and VisionPersonals.com. According to the "Ethernet Status" in Windows, I've received 5,055,0000,0000 bytes (that's in the GB range) over the past two and a half hours. That would blow through many of the plans' monthly allotments. Those that could handle that cost multiple hundreds of dollars a day, and I'd still run out of the monthly allotment within a week.

So, I just bought a mediocre smartphone via TracFone. It'll replace my current phone, my Palm, and my iPod, and will give me the ability to go to the Internet for short periods when I really need to, but not for entertainment. I'll stick with Clear for my Internet access for now. I'm just frustrated that I couldn't fold all of these things together.

One more notch in my belt

There have been a few people who have chatted with me and remarked that they don't think I'm overweight. I thought I'd show everyone this picture, as opposed to a similar one I have that is more flattering. This is me last night. I'm not saying I'm obese, because I'm clearly not. But you can see a significant paunch on me. I am making progress, though. You may be able to tell that I'm on the second hole on this belt. It's a little tight, but it's measurable progress, as I wasn't able to do that earlier. This morning, I weighed in at 213 pounds.

Another low-cal weekend

I weighed in at 215 pounds this morning. That's actually higher than I expected, although I did have a bunch of candy yesterday. I'm going to attempt to do what I did last weekend: 1000 calories of food a day and at least two hours of exercise a day. From here, five pounds a week will get me to my December 1st goal.

I'm also working on changing the text of my profile. I'll probably also take some of the best of my recent blog pictures and use them to replace my aged profile pictures.

I'll have a lot of free time today, because there was only 13 NFL games last week. As I write this, I'm watching the Redskins/Vikings game from Thursday, which catches me completely up. I have no idea what I'll do with the extra time.

Three hours of pedalling

I got three hours in on my pedal exerciser today, which matches what I did yesterday. Of course, I had all day yesterday to get it in, whereas I only had the evening today. I don't think I can keep that up, but I'm aiming to get two hours in each day. I also managed to avoid all of the leftover Halloween candy at work today. I'm at 217.5 pounds at the moment.

I may post blog entries daily this month, just to try to keep my feet to the fire on my weight-loss plan. I was able to keep my intake under 1000 calories and get the two-hour walk yesterday, as promised. I'll be staying home today, but I hope to get three to four hours of pedal exercising in and to eat the same amount of food as yesterday. I'm at 219 pounds this morning. The first five pounds are really easy, though. I think it's due to having less food in my gullet. We'll see if I make serious progress this month. Again, I'd like to be 200 on December 1st, but even 205 would be reasonable progress. I know I can lose half a pound a day over the course of several weeks because I've done it before. It's just a question of doing it again.

A real push to 200 pounds this month

I've still been having issues with getting my weight down. Leftover Halloween candy hasn't helped. Last month, weekends seemed to have been my weakness. This month, I'm going to make a real push at eating less. This weekend, I'm going to try to stay at or below 1000 calories a day. Rice helps a lot because it's very filling for its calories. Broccoli is also really filling for its calories, but I'm not likely to eat too much of that. As for the rest of the month, if I can keep myself at an average of 1800 calories a day and average two hours a day on my pedal exerciser, I should be able to lose weight fast enough to get to 200 by December 1st. I'll have to be careful around Thanksgiving, though.

I've been attempting to watch every NFL game with NFL Game Rewind, same as I did last year. Usually, that means I'm home all day on Saturday and Sunday. This week, however, there were six teams on byes (probably due to the World Series). So, I only have three games left (two from last week and the Thursday Night game from this week) to watch tomorrow. I'm thinking about going out for a two-hour walk. I haven't decided which direction I'll go. My choices are North (Fred Meyer's) and South (Goodwill).

As usual, I have no plans for having anyone over. It's weird that the people who chat with me (often men, with the remainder being women who live far away) always say that I'm too good looking to be alone. Perhaps they're just trying to flatter me? It's not like there's a long line of women outside my door waiting to come in and screw me. Must be my personality.

I haven't been posting blog entries recently, but I had to do the cat ears for Halloween again. If you look through my previous blog entries, you'll see that this is the fourth time I've worn them for Halloween.
