I was 15. OMG, I just realized how long ago that was. Forty years!!! Yet, I remember the moment perfectly. I can see it clearly in my mind, and my heart still races at the thought.
It was love, love at first sight. And forty years later, we still have a connection that is unexplainable to others. Ours is a love that is difficult to describe. It began as a forbidden love, moved to a tortured love, then on to unrequited love, and then for years we had no contact with each other.
Until, a comedy of errors and coincidences put me in the frame of mind to search and seek him. And then, time disappeared, our mind set was set back twenty five years ago. We didn't miss a heart beat.
I've never made love to this man (at least not in the flesh). Yet curiously, I've learned the greatest lessons of love with and from this man.

Perhaps you thought I had just had sex. No such luck. I'm just a mother hen that woke up in the middle of the night and found that one of her little chicks hadn't checked in.
The easier it gets, the harder my makes it. All she had to do is text. A single word would do. "safe" or, if that is too many letters "ok". It's the least a parent deserves, especially when I have her on my cell plan and foot the bill.

I've always felt the ole ticker skip a beat when I saw a man in a military dress uniform (sorry, but fatiques do nothing for me).

My grandfather never stopped calling November 11th Armistice Day. He was proud, and rightly so, of our countries and his own contributions in World War I. He told us, as we sat on his knee, the story of the armistice, the truce agreement signed in an old railroad car in the forest of Compiègne on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month.
He found it an outrage when Congress changed Veteran's Day to the fourth monday in October in 1968, affording a long weekend to federal employees. In 1975 he penned a letter to President Gerald Ford thanking him for restoring Veteran's Day to November 11th.

This week has been a difficult one for me emotionally. There has been a lot going on inside my head. Autumn is my favorite season, but it is a time of anniverseries. Anniversaries of the DON'T feel good kind, like of my father's passing.
I think the hurricane and all the devastation has me thinking about him all the more. If this were the 1970's, he'd be working on solving some of the problems people are encountering. It is what he did for a living, but more importantly, it is what he'd do as a volunteer.
He was a great man and I have found myself remembering him with love all week. It's a bittersweet remembrance. Sweet, make you smile memories, yet I'm sadly missing him.
