Recently, with a greater influx of foreigners into Asia, certain Asian countries are not facing disdains and complaints about being anti-Semitic and being associated with Nazism with regard to exposed Swastika symbols in Buddhist and Hindu temples. Granted that these foreigners are entering into a different culture and instead of learning from those indigenous people and their culture are now imposing their "open mindedness" upon the places they visit.
The swastika symbol, from ancient Sanskrit, means happiness and prosperity. It has been used for centuries by Hindus and Buddhists, and has turned up in archaeological digs in Europe. But many Western tourists associate it with anti-Semitism and the Holocaust because the emblem was adopted by Nazi Germany to try to enhance a sense of ancient lineage.
Should we therefore remove all swastikas from religious artifacts and temples and museums with Buddhist swastikas symbols?
Alas, these are the dilemma faced in Asian countries seeking to cater to those tourist dollars much like the invading Spanish forces who brought Jesus into the land of the Americas by slaughtering them wholesale for the glory of God and gold.
We still don't change despite thousands of years of progress. Sigh.
