Let's look at the story from a slightly different point of view.

You are the owner of a resort. It is a nice place, the kind of place that families come back to year after year. Practically a tradition.

But, your job is hard. In addition to the maintenance of a big old building you have to do marketing, keep the guests entertained, hope the weather is good but your biggest problem is managing the staff.

You hire a lot of wholesome middle class for the front of the house, but for the dirty jobs you hire blacks and Puerto Ricans. You give them lodging in a row of cabins.

You work them as hard as they can, but at night they raise hell. They stay up all night drinking beer and dancing and also fucking around with each other. A little of this is fine but if it spills over into our customers it is bad.

The worst of them all is the ass hole dance Instructor, who seems to be in the middle of all the shit that happens out there. He gets into fights, you believe he is screwing around with one of the older customers, and you find out that this clown is moonlighting at a local night club, and alarmingly, screwing around with the teenage of one of our repeat .

He is good, but who cares?

So. ..the question is posed:

What do you do with this guy?

You are a guy. Tough guy. You are from the city, and things being what they were and needing a job and being stuck in a rut you become a "civilian contractor" on the losing side in a war zone.

Glad to make it out of there intact you go to Paris for awhile to hang out with your buddy, a saloon piano player. I suppose you are in a bar one night and a little blond bumps into you. You are not much of a ladies man, I don't think, and she is out of your league but she falls for you and you let her into your heart.

Things are going fine, there are blossoms and romance, and you fall deeply in love. But, something happens, and you need to leave town suddenly. You and your buddy and your little girl friend pack up, and at the train station, you get the news that she is dumping you. She does not tell you that she is married.

You are tough but fair when you want to be and you develop a little entourage of faithful employees and local officials, and none of them has seen you drink, mess with a female, or smile. To the extent that is "power" you have it, in your little empire.

You are networked into al sorts of activities, not all of them legal. One night one of your slimy customers gives you something very valuable to keep, he disappears suddenly, there are cops, you lay low, since you have developed some skill in not sticking your neck out.

You are running your place one night and in walks the little blond, with her guy, an internationally known rabble rouser. She needs the very valuable thing you have to get out of dodge.

Of course she throws herself on you. Not very ladylike. You know what she is after.

Let's look at the same story from the point of view of Paul, who is George Peppard.

You are young and hunky and working to become a writer. You make friends with an older, wealthier woman who is part FWB and part supporter I.e. she moves you into an apartment and gives you money.

You may or may not be conflicted about this. She is reasonably attractive. (She is Patricia Neal who has played opposite all of the classic leading men).

You find out that in a room nearby there is a beautiful, graceful young woman who likes to throw hell raising parties, and you become her "friend" although you clearly dig her.

You gradually find out that she was married at 14 to Jed Clampett, took off from her little town in Tulip Texas to NY and then transformed herself into a timeless icon of beauty and style, getting rid of her drawl and surviving by shoplifting and being a flirt.

You later find out she is running information to a gangster in prison, and is being chased by a Brazilian highbrow.

At some point she is arrested for conspiracy, and you help bail her out. Eventually your latest book is a success, you express your love, and you ride around in the rain looking for her cat.
