Going to Work on an Egg Banned!!!

I was horrified to hear the other day that the egg industry has been dealt a shocking blow when it was advised it would not be allowed to show the iconic “Go To Work On An Egg” ads, which featured Tony Hancock in the 50s. These ads were to be screened on television to mark the 50th anniversary of the British Lion mark.

It would appear that eggs are not a food restricted under the new rules on advertising but, despite this, the Broadcast Advertising Clearance Centre (BACC) has said the ads cannot be repeated because the concept of “eating eggs every day goes against the principle of eating a varied diet”. Erm, so eating a Maccy D breakfast muffin is any better? Come to that, some well-known cereals are so sugary, they’d make your hyper if that had those for breakfast every day!! I have to say that when I heard the famous egg slogan, it never once entered my thoughts that I’d be stuffing my face with eggs all day, every day!!

Popular author Fay Weldon, who headed the team which came up with the famous slogan in 1957 has branded the decision “absurd”. Too bloody right!!

The British Egg Information Service (BEIS) has launched a special website (the usual triple W’s dot gotoworkonanegg dot co dot uk), where people can view the banned ads. You can also add your vote of whether you’d like to see the ads banned or not. I had a giggle watching Tony Hancock being his usual grumbly self, and then I sensibly clicked on the button that said these ads shouldn’t be banned!!

It has been proved eggs are packed with protein and essential vitamins and minerals and new evidence has shown that eating eggs for breakfast may also help with slimming. There are also no restrictions on the number of eggs people can eat.

In an attempt to reach a compromise, the BEIS offered to add a line to the ads which would state that eggs should be eaten as part of a varied diet but the BACC has rejected this suggestion as being contradictory to the overall message of the ads.

A leading nutritionist said: “Eggs are a great choice for all the family, providing plenty of vitamins and minerals. They are also relatively low in saturated fat and there are only 80Kcals per medium egg, making them ideal for dieters.”

Jeez....When you see some of the other 'patronizing' adds our kids are subjected to, it makes you wonder doesn't it?

My 'Little Fella' loves scrambled egg on toast for breakfast and I'd much prefer to see him eating that than the so called 'healthy' cereals, which as you say have so many hidden sweeteners and additives.

At least with an egg, what you see is what you get.

Thanx for the info, I'm off to vote.

I eat at least two boiled eggs almost every day, and have done so for years, and I have been slim all my life. I'm getting a bit peed off with the Nanny State, and do gooders

Stupidest decision ever!

Does eating bread or cereal every day go against the "principle" of a varied diet too? What about an apple a day, it keeps the doctor away, don't you know?

Well crikey !! Had no idea that Fay Weldon went that far back. Reading her taught me so much about women

Eggs...well.... Hmmmm. Ironically, I just posted about my height and suggested that it might be partially due to the two raw eggs with goats milk and honey I had to have before school every day till I was 13.

My blog is a free-fire zone. Come armed with a sense of humor

These sort of decisions are beyond a yolk and crack me up leaving me eggsparated - quite honestly an oeuf is an oeuf!
