Well in a small country such as mine with just 1.3 million people, and most being conservative, it's a norm. Mostly I think it's just about putting higher value on discretion rather than safety per se ( at least here in Trinidad & Tobago).

I know! It's an interesting quirk of the lifestyle: to be not quite on a "last name basis" with one's playmates. Weird, isn't it? You know their screen handle, their first names, sometimes how many kids they have, or that they have pets, sometimes what they do for a living. But I'll be damned if I could tell you their last names. I actually just posted a similar blog entry about how people are so guarded and stilted on here. Or on any hook-up site. Really, if one is worried about intimacy with others interfering with one's life or personal relationships, swinging may not be the best choice of hobbies.

If all your after is a quickie, yeah, your right. Myself, i think it's a lot better, all the way around if you get to know a person somewhat.
