So Unlike Deja Vu

I've been working crazy hours. It's not likely to end anytime soon. When I pull into the parking lot, it is still dark outside. When I get my first break (7AM) - the sun hasn't yet risen over the building in which I had been spending the previous two hours. By my second break, most normal people are finally at their jobs -- I see others speeding because they are a few minutes late.

Anyway, that is not the topic - but it may be a contributing factor to the "condition" I am experiencing. Following is my best description of my "symptoms":

Have you ever been flipping through channels and for some reason you stop on a movie that you have never seen before? That something compels you to be sucked in, even though its somewhere in the middle of the story?

I have, and I find that if it is compelling enough, I watch it all the way to the end - just to find out what happens, knowing that I can view it from the top at a later date to find out "how we got here".

The reason for stopping and watching can be as simple as recognizing an actor-that-you-appreciate on the screen and becoming curious what the movie is that he or she is in (remember, you haven't seen this film yet - and it's already in progress). Other reasons can, of course, include that at the moment the channel popped-up on your screen something intriguing was happening (it could be a car chase or a sex scene, an argument or ANYthing, right? Whatever it is, it's a big enough hook to stay your remote-control-trigger-finger). Sometimes, it is neither of these easy targets and instead, perhaps, an actor or actress you have NEVER seen before or a circumstance that you would least likely be drawn into for spending your valuable attention span dollars.

And you watch. And you wonder... who IS that guy? What is he doing with that briefcase? (or whatever). The scene continues, other things happen, other characters are "introduced" -- to you anyway, they have likely been exposed earlier in the film. Viewers from the beginning of the script already know the relationship between all the characters but you TRY to figure it out by what is said... what is done. Things implied don't make any sense to you. Flashbacks become part of the timeline, since you don't know that they are flashing backward.

You're a bit confused, but still intrigued. You begin predicting what will happen next, even though you barely know what has transpired previously. You're kinda surprised at every turn. The more time you spend with it, the more it starts to be understandable -- even though you STILL don't know so-and-so's name and WHY he and that other character just don't get along, or are madly in love, or whatever the plotline feeds you.

That's... uh... where I'm at currently.

I can identify with this. Sort of in the dark and just sort of understanding, but not really getting it. A day lat and a dollar short. Always the last to know.

My brother-in-law reads books this way. He told me as a compliment on my book, "It was so good that when I got to the end I started over from the beginning this time."

I thought that was such a bizarre way to read a book.
