Spunky's right. I've trained a lot of dogs, and I prefer to encourage good behavior, but it isn't always effective. Some times you have to clamp down on them to get them to listen.

A tourist in Italy spotted an old man with a donkey, and the donkey was obeying slight hand signals perfectly and calmly, never screwing up once. The tourist was amazed and asked how the old man got him to behave that way. The old man said he used a technique of tender love and kindness. The tourist asked for a demonstration, so the old man pulled a two by four out of the donkey's pack load, and cracked the donkey right between the eyes with it. The tourist, appalled, hollered out "That's not tender love and kindness! " And the old man said "No it ain't, but you gotta get his attention first."
