Social Media

Is it a source of information or a source of entertainment? Is social media too powerful? Social media seems akin to mob mentality... the loudest most angry voices get all the attention. Facts, what's that all about? Just get a big following, twist the truth to further your agenda, and that’s that.

For me, social media is how I keep in contact with family and friends overseas mainly. For that purpose I think it's pretty neat, however that's about it.

I think social media has gone out of control sometimes on different events. But it is a good form of staying in touch with family and friends. You would never hear from them if we didn't have social media. hugssssss V

So it's not just me... I just tried to Google something, and the first thing that came up was the social media reaction to it.

Is it a source of information or a source of entertainment? Accurate or factual information – absolutely not. Entertainment some but the quality is not very high.

Is social media too powerful? It only has the power a person allows it to have over them. The insecure believe it is real and act/write in manors that make them believe they are powerful. This site’s blog is sad proof of that.

Social media seems akin to mob mentality. True, it is without doubt. The anonymity makes some/many people believe they are innocent of being disrespectful because others do the same disrespectful things.

The loudest most angry voices get all the attention. Only if people give them attention.

Facts, what's that all about? On “social” media facts, or a complete look at all the facts, is irrelevant to the sense of “power” the weak and insecure think they have.

Just get a big following, twist the truth to further your agenda, and that’s that. Yup, that’s about right.

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

The “news” media (ALL versions), since they became part of the entertainment business, is mostly hype. If a story can’t be sensationalized you probably won’t hear about it. Like good ole Don Henley said in ‘Dirty Laundry’ . . . “the bubble headed bleached blonde comes on at five. She can tell you 'bout the plane crash with a gleam in her eye. It's interesting when people die. Give us dirty laundry.”

Not much of entertainment is of high quality these days.

"The loudest and most angry voices"... I just look at the rise of ISIS and the Donald, both a Social media masters.

It seems the masses do like the semmy, more sensational portion of the News

I use it to connect with a few family members, old classmates who I still enjoy, and online friends who I wouldn't know otherwise. I get a news feed on AssPlace, and I've ruthlessly culled it. That isn't a bit different from selecting my my own reading list in books and magazines. I'm the one who chooses which sources I trust and read regularly. Back in the pre-internet days, I never read the National Enquirer and I paid no attention to Robert Novack or Cal Thomas. I might occasionally look at a column by a writer I strongly disagreed with, but I didn't write letters excoriating them then and I don't now.

You don't have to use the sites the way the sites would like you to. Just like this site, you have control over what you'll read and what you'll write. But I don't think there's any inalienable right not to be offended by what we see, or by the behavior of others. Even idiots have the right to free speech- that's what makes it free. You pick your battles. I'm reasonably certain the world isn't waiting to hear me speak out about Caitlyn Jenner's sexual proclivities or Rachel Dolezal's family issues- so I keep my mouth shut about them.

I think my biggest concern with social media is that it encourages people to "stay home" and not engage in life. And then they feel compelled to jump on a "subject" no matter the importance and blow it way out of bounds

There is an awful lot of rubbish on Social Media but on balance I find it good if you refuse to become addicted!!!

I'm only on FB and here. I use FB to keep in touch with friends and family all over the world...the easy exchange of photos is what really appeals to me but I don't go mad trying to accumulate as many friends as I can...I am a pretty private person so they are mostly family.

I prefer to get my news from a reputable news service and ours here are pretty good. We still have News programmes in Ireland not entertainment news and scandals.

Social media only has as much power as you give it.
Social media can be used for good. Witness #ArabSpring and Twitter.
Social media personalities can be ignored or laughed at OR
They can spur on change.
Just my two cents,
Kitkat
PS I only use mine to keep in touch with my friends and family that are scattered around the world.

The observant make the best lovers,
I may not do right, but I do write,
I have bliss, joy, and happiness in my life,

My concern is people who use it as thier only source of information. Running with the crowd and never fact checking shit... just consume it and re-tweet.

I have new had an interest in Facebook, I was always pretty good at keeping in contact with friends and family I wanted to stay in contact with.

The news has certainly changed to become a form of entertainment. The negative side effect of CNN.

George Carlin famously stated... "never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers". Does social media contribute to the dumbing down of society?

Yip. For the most part you've nailed it, spot on! I don't seem to linger long in places, or with folk, who indulge in ego stroking ... Especially their own.
