The 15th Virtual Symposium – Black and White – Let That Be Your Last Battlefield
The 15th Virtual Symposium – Black and White – Let That Be Your Last Battlefield This post is my contribution to the virtual symposium, edition # 15, which has been organized by humorlife. A list of other participants in this symposium can be found at Unknown. Black and White… It can be in reference to a monochromatic picture, drawing, television image, computer monitor or film. It could also be in reference to a type of cookie; theories of a clear distinction; for example good and evil, with black being associated with bad or evil and white being associated with good or virtue. It’s that clear either/or distinction I want to explore. When talking about human interaction, that either or line of thinking, boils down to “us or them”. The topic has been tackled again and again, in literature, film and television… one of the best attempts IMHO, was in an episode of the 60s TV show Star Trek entitled, “Let that Be Your Last Battlefield”. If you’re not an original Star Trek fan, or you are unfamiliar with the episode, here is the Reader’s digest version. Two aliens Lokai (a political refugee) and Bele (a police commissioner on a hunt to retrieve political traitors) end up on the Starship Enterprise. Bele has been pursuing Lokai across the galaxy for the equivalent of 50,000 earth years. Lokai is requesting political asylum and Bele wants to take him back to their home planet of Chevron, where Lokai says he will be murdered. It’s obvious they hate each other intensely. The two make accusations of crimes committed by each other, throwing endless allegations and a never ending stream of political rhetoric back and forth, to vilify each other. A few attempted dust ups later, Bele attempts taking over the Enterprise with his mind, failing the first time, succeeding the second time, they arrive back at Chevron to find that all the planets inhabitants had annihilated each other. Even though they are the last two of their species, their battle rages on, each attempting to kill the other… they leave the ship, go down to the planet, and continue their ideological Armageddon on the surface. The show was aimed at putting the spotlight on racial tensions in the U.S. at the time… to show bigotry and narrow mindedness for what it was… in a word, silly, ignorant, and most of all destructive, (ok I know, more than a word). In the episode, the difference between the two warring factions came down to clinging to some belief about something trivial, then attaching meaning to it, and trying to convince others that it has merit. The essence of this is aptly captured by the statements of Bele, to Spock and Captain Kirk. ”It’s obvious even to the most simple minded that Lokai is of an inferior breed”. Spock with his pure logic, points out that it is obvious that Lokai and Bele are of the same breed. Surprised Bele states, “are you blind Commander Spock? Look at me? I am Black on the right side. Lokai is white on the right side. All his people are.” But I think what gets lost to the casual observer is the underlying issue of the struggle for power… the struggle between those who have power and those who feel oppressed by it. If you are on the same side of the power dynamic (real or perceived), with other humans, they are generally thought of as “us”. All humans on the other side… well, that’s “them”. The power dynamic is what keeps us in constant conflict! In the words of Pink Floyd’s “Us and Them”, “With, without. And who'll deny it's what the fighting's all about?” You name the conflict, from civil wars, religious conflicts, (every religion has had brutal conflicts within what is supposed to be the same faith), politics (the Republican Party in the U.S.), always starts and escalates when someone successfully divides people into us and them. The old axioms “divide and conquer” – “a house divided against itself cannot stand”, exist for a reason… these are lessons learned the hard way, by those who have come before us. Remember we all share this shrinking small house called earth and there is only us, and no them. Remember this, especially when we don’t agree on things. Don’t divide the house, or follow those who try. That applies here in the Ville and out in the real world too. Find pleasure in giving pleasure |

I remember that episode of Star Trek very well. I especially like your last paragraph. I don't know that people have learned from the past. Lincoln tried to appeal "to the better angels of our nature" and avoid civil war. Human nature is both good and evil, light and dark and too often the dark side of human nature wins over the light. A very interesting read. Your post is very apt given Dionald Trump's inane divide-and-rule comments.

Wow... is anyone still using monochrome monitors? "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" is a great episode. I'm a little fuzzy as to whether one race was supposed to have been dominant and the other subjugated, but I seem to recall the story ending not especially happily. Great post, and great image! Although now I want a black and white cookie... Stop in, read, and offer comments at my "swinging as seen in the media" blog, "Confessions of a Lifestyle Man" humorlife, which is also the home of the monthly virtual symposium. "Divide and conquer" is acceptable and actually works well as an algorithm in computer science. " Divide et impera" has been a motto for politicians since politics existed. Politicians will always use it. We should see our differences as delightful effect of diversity, not as dividing factor. It is time for all of us recognize the value and necessity of diversity in humans. Good show Khu! Our ancestors demonstrated on any number of occasions that they were smarter than us. There were uprisings in the old pre-revolutionary war South that found poor whites and African slaves allied against the plantation elite. They knew in a real and visceral way that they had much more in common than they had separating them. Both were exploited and robbed by the wealthy, and set against each other to divide and conquer. Not only were such insurgencies ruthlessly suppressed, but any knowledge that they had even occurred was suppressed. The aristocracy could not afford to have it get out that they were vulnerable. No examples of cooperation could survive if they were to feel secure. By the violence of the reaction we understand the terror they felt. It's still happening today. In our nations history textbooks the word slave is being supplanted by the word "worker". Usually the victors write the history books. The United States is unique in allowing the cultural descendants of the old slavocracy to revise our history to downplay the subjugation of a race, to treat it as a benign but unenlightened "peculiar institution" that the cotton economy was anxious to put behind it. And so another generation is being hamstrung- and poisoned- by the same old ignorant propaganda. Tell the truth. Resist! We have nothing to lose but our chains.
