Hating on Apple…

Hating on Apple…

I am not a huge fan of Apple… Mac computers OK, it is a very good although somewhat limiting PC. That’s right Apple fans, a Mac is a PC (a personal computer), not a Windows PC, but a subset of the hardware that Windows was designed to work with. It’s not magical, it’s not a better mouse trap, it is limiting. The limiting factor is what makes it more appealing to a lot of people.

Now, before you get your panties in a bunch, here are some simple facts about computers… computers or more to the point, computer design (hardware or software) is just a choice, either or. That’s it. You want something that has fewer problems, let it do less. You want it to do more; then you will have more issues. It’s that simple; don’t believe me. Look at a calculator… it’s a computer, specifically design to do math… far more reliable that a Personal Computer, Windows, Mac, or other boxes running flavors of UNIX or Linux. Do you want it to be graphics based (the route Apple originally took) or texted base, (the route Windows and UNIX took), again a choice that has to be made. Even when it comes to how secure a computer is, there is a choice… the running joke is… if you want your computer to be safe… disable the Wi-Fi and remove the network card… it’s definitely safer that way, you just can’t use it how you normally do. And there is the common misconception that Apple’s Operation Systems (OS) are “safer” than a Windows OS… well it’s not… not according to the CVE or CCE (the organizations that track information security vulnerabilities and exposures). Macs are delivered to customer is a more locked down fashion, Windows boxes are open… if you wanted to (and had the time and know how), you could lock a Windows box down, by disabling features to get the level of security you wanted… or open it up… everything will work, the software and hardware you want, but also the stuff you don’t want. It always goes back to having to choose… the trade off, between simplicity and functionality.

What Apple excels at, once they came back from the dead, was marketing. The real irony of Apple’s survival, (a very surreal twist)… it was bailed out of certain death by a $150 million cash infusion from Bill Gates and Microsoft, back in 1997, to guarantee it’s short term survival. Anyway, marketing… Apple took an almost McDonald’s like approach, “get our customer while they are young… own them forever”. They have done it very well, and the older and younger generations have just followed like lemmings. For the records, I do like Mac computers… for what it is designed to do, it does it very well (all be it a little over-priced IMH… the hate I have for Apple is the “i” everything… iPad, iPod, iPhone. How their business model hasn’t gone through the anti-trust hassles that other have faced is beyond me. Apple fans are loyal, almost like cult members, and my are now members (iPod owners)… and since they are , I have to help then when things go wrong. You own an iWhatever… no it owns you it seems. BTW, I hope all you iFan, realize the iPod is just the digital reinvention of Sony’s Walkman and Discman, riding on the coat tails of the Napster phenomenon. And Tablets were around long before the iPad… the last kick at the can was back in 1999 / 2000… but since they were more costly than laptops, they didn’t really catch on. But I digress.

Back to my Apple hating adventure. So yesterday I pack up my 3 boys, and head off to the giant Mall, where the Apple store is. Being a tech guy, I usually don’t run to the store for help, most computer companies, put all the tech stuff on line, so if you can read, you can do it yourself. The Mall is forever under construction (always expanding and renovating)… I tried to park near the entrance where the apple store is, but no… under construction. I drive around to the other side of the mall, park and saw the sign I blogged about yesterday. I then proceed to drag the 3 through the mall, with the 5 year old wanting to ride up and down every escalator we pass. Get to the store, its packed full of all the Apple cult members. I start looking around for a free person to ask a question, I wanted to see if it was possible to get all the bought and paid for software consolidated onto one of the 2 iPOD 5, my middle owns (an even longer story how he ended up with two). I see a row of stools that looks like a tech support help desk (it says something like apple genius behind it). On my way there, I am intercepted by a 20 something hipster girl (complete with would be Rasta hat)… the genius concierge. She asked if I needed help, so I hit her with the question. Her attitude… well let’s just say her customer service skills need some help. Long story short, what I want might be possible, but I need to book an appointment with the “geniuses”, and come back to know yeah or nay. No doubt, I will be reaching for my wallet, with said appointment. We didn’t even get to the question that my oldest had, before she blew us off. Found another blue shirt, who suggested I “may” be able to find the info to handle my oldest ’s issue online.

So to re-cap… problems with an apple product… it will cost me time and money to fix, and I have to put up with attitude for my trouble. Yeah, Apple iProducts are great… they are easy to use, and very reliable… not so much it seems. But I guess if you are brainwashed into believing so, then keep on believing.

As I said on yesterday's post....I will never own another Apple product again. All three of my children (adults) have walked away too and only one or two of the grandkids still have iPads. I manage very well with my Windows 8 laptop...I have actually grown to like the versatility once I got over the initial shock!

Maybe it is that I "grew up" with "normal " computers and am reluctant to learn the "I" stuff. But My iPad was my biggest mistake. it is such an expensive music and movie player for me. I have had my Tough book for many years and it sticks with me and suits my needs. a word on the Apple Stores, my only experience was after I bought my iPad, I went in to ask a simple question. The alleged "experts " could not help me, because I was not able to explain my problem in "Apple" language. I finally had to very politely tell the Senior expert (he may have been 20 years old) "How the "F" do I connect this piece of "S" to the internet?". Then he caught on to my question, I guess the military way of communicating still does work. No more of their products for me.

I feel you. For those who really like their products, there are thankfully ways around their lockdown. Funny that it is know as jail breaking.

My biggest peeve about the iPod, IPad, iPhone, is that you must purchase everything through Apple. Not only is the purchasing mechanism clumsy, but Apple gets a cut. So they have their hands in the pockets of all the developers too.

Sexy, their time in the sunshine will end... just like IBM, WordPerfect, Microsoft before them. Even Google's time will come.

RIM definitely got to arrogant and mismanaged their product line. I felt a similar degree of arrogance while in the Apple store. Eventually consumers wake up and vote with their feet.

Yes, I have a great loyalty to my wallet, but I will pay through the nose for service. Nothing man ever builds will work perfectly, I know that going in, but when shit goes south, don't make me jump through hoops to get it going in the direction I want.

My current phone (Samsung Note), I bought because the onscreen button were large. For me a cell phone (smart or otherwise) is still a phone, first and foremost.

Now, alleged "experts" are so narrow in their expertise, that they don't understand basic computing. They have been taught procedure, and don't really understand the building block of the technology they support.

There has definitely been a move to make computing devices more like toasters... single purpose and disposable. I remember having a conversation with a senior Apple product manager, and suggest the iPad would be something if it could make cell phone calls, since you can get a model that can be connected to a cell network. He informed that will never happen... Apple will always keep the iPhone, IPad and Mac with separate functionality, and limited to their own arena.

For kids, iPods are not even a music platform anymore... it's a portable gaming console... that how my kids use it. Brainwash them early and own them for life.

I have an iPhone. My first smart phone was an iPhone. When the 5S came out, my husband had to have one. I was ready for a change, so I started researching other phones. To be honest, I was lazy and didn't want to learn a new phone. So I caved.

I have no idea what jail breaking is for, or what kinds of things are locked down. My iPhones have always done what I wanted them to, with no problems.

My tablet is not an iPad. I never wanted one of those. I have an ASUS. I got it as a gift. I had never heard of them before. It does everything I have wanted it to do. I'm not a gamer, musical composer or movie maker. All the things that you need to have to do all of those things are unnecessary for me.

I need a really great kiss!!

I have friends who have iPhones; I listen to them curse about their phone when they malfunction... but they still love them. That's that cult like belief at play. The iPhone is like any other smartphone. .. no better no worse... it's the attitude surrounding the product that I'm not happy with.

Asus has been around for a long time... like Pentium chip days. They gained their fame as a motherboard manufacturer.

"a subset of the hardware that Windows was designed to work with"

You certainly have the "facts" screwed up. Microsoft licensed the interface to make Windows 3.o from Apple. No one remembers Windows 1.0 because it was a dog until Apple was convinced to license the basic interface to MicroSoft.

FACT: Windows was a cludge overlay placed on top of an antiquated MS-DOS OS that Gates "stole" ($5K) from a guy who copied CP/M (Digital Research); then MicroSoft immediately it to licensed to IBM under the name "PC DOS"

FACT: Macs can run Windows (All Versions) - BUT - a MS "Windows" PC can NOT run any version of the Mac OS's.

"$150 million cash infusion from Bill Gates and Microsoft"

That $150 Million was the back payment that MicroSoft OWED Apple for license fees of both the graphics interface and True Type (an Apple invention) that they had not paid.

btw The Apple Human Interface Standards (first publication) is available from Addison Wesley. It was originally developed for LISA by the group that had developed the Star for Xerox at the Xerox's Paulo Alto Research Center (PARC). All but John Warnock joined Apple after being closed down by Xerox. John started Adobe.

The reason for the lack of "anti-trust hassles" is because Apple INVENTED and PATENTED the technologies that they developed. MicroSoft had those "anti-trust hassles" (and still does) because they copied and "borrowed" other people's innovations including copy righting the word "Windows" which btw is a play on "X-Windows" (Unix circa 197.

FACT: Apple is credited with being innovators. MicroSoft is not; simply because all MS does is copy, borrow, then license or buy the innovation of others.

btw The Apple Newton (the forerunner of tablets -ie PDA's) was started in 1987 by Apple. as a concept of their DynaBook project.

You might join ACM - IF you qualify - and do some research in their extensive library for facts. BT - DT

And the apple cult steps up.

Open... really, Windows 1, are we back in late 80's... at least get the fact correct. Windows was a rip off of OS/2. There is absolute no denying that Microsoft was the master of "you can sell to us, how much do you want, or we will reverse engineer you". I think all those people are now at Google.

Macs run all version of Windows.. it can now since it move to the same Intel platform that Windows PC were built around, and also because Windows has device driver to support all the hardware in a Mac.

Windows PC can't run Mac OS, could it be because the MAC OS doesn't have great enough device driver coverage to work with all the different kind of hardware you will find in Windows PC's built by different Manufacturers. Also have you heard the term Hackitosh? That a hobbyist, building their own PC and running the MAC OS on the box.

Again are we talking about the past or current? Or is your belief that Apple invented UNIX... isn't that the basis of the current Intel based Mac OS?

The anti-trust launched over the imbedding of IE into the OS in a manner that interfered with other competing browsers run as an alternative. The everyone lined up with their complaints.

The Tablet concept dates back in the 50s before Apple's tablet concept. Have a look at a 1960's episode of Star Trek.

As far as Joining ACM, thank you, but NO! I will stick to the organizations that have immediate computing business relevance, and let the scientist stick to theirs. The very last thing I would ever want to do, is to have close interaction with a bunch of academics who are too busy trying to prove they are the smartest person in the room, to really push the ball.

Fact! Humans write code and design hardware, and no one writes perfect code (or designs perfect hardware) and no one ever will. That is why there are patches and updates. To believe the "perfect myth" that Apple and next must have computer company that comes along tries to spin, is foolish. It will always be choose your poison.

"doesn't have great enough device driver coverage to work with all the different kind of hardware you will find in Windows PC's built by different Manufacturers."

... and what different processors has MS Windows ever run on except for Intel and the 80286 platform? At least the original DR-DOS (that MS cloned for PC-DOS/MS-DOS/Windows) ran on a variety of processors - not just Intel - giving manufacturers some latitude unlike today where they manufacturer clones of each other. Fortunately for MS, Caldera destroyed all documents as part of the anti-trust settlement that MS had to pay.

Please understand something thoroughly before you postulate such nonsense.

Khu,
your disagreement with OpenAgenda seems interesting to say the least.

I originally worked on PCs in the 80's. Come mid 80's I was introduced to one of the first versions of Apple Macs. I was a bit flummoxed until I caught on. Despite my prior experience with Macs, my first couple of lap tops were Toshiba Satellites. In 2007, I bought my first macbook (we had different versions of MP3 players that all broke down before we bought our mac book, but we bought our first iPod at the same time as the macbook). I am still using that mac book. And that iPod.

In the meantime, my son has used a couple of different lap tops that work with windows because of his gaming. In every other instance of use for a computer, he prefers my macbook or his dad's macbook. He tries to do most of his gaming on our macbooks and only resorts to his PC lap top when the game is not available for a mac.

Prior to Oct. of 2012, I had smart phones that were not iPhones. They were OK, but when I bought my first iPhone in Oct. of 2012, after getting used to it, I grew to love it. My dad has all sorts of problems with his Galaxy phone, and my other friends have different kinds of problems with their various smart phones. While not perfect by any means, my iPhone does what I want it to do and I like it.

I don't believe that I am acting like a cult member. It is simply a preference. And do I believe that they invented anything? No, I simply believe that they invented a better mouse trap, but not the original one.

I will be buying either a new iPhone 5 or 6 in October and I will be buying a new MacBook for my household in December. My 2007 macbook just needs to be replaced but I think 7 years of continued use in 9 countries (that is counting the U.S. where we normally live) is a great use for the buck (I bought it refurbished, if you will. Prior owner only used it less than a year). I own that classic iPod and a newer nano one now.

My ex, who swore he would hate to use apple products simply because he could not stand Steve Jobs (I read his biography that was released after his death, and this man was barely tolerable but good at innovation) will be buying his 2nd macbook pro in a month or so. And owns two iPods. And has an iPhone.

My son still likes to use his PC laptop, but again, I will emphasize that he likes it only for certain games and insists that my macbook is superior, despite its age.

If it is not your preference, then simply don't purchase it or use it. I understand that there might be a fascinating story behind why the father who hates "i" anything would end up with a child who owns the products he has come to despise, but you didn't blog about that. You blogged about the fact that you think people who prefer mac products are part of a cult, or more likely, you are accusing them of being brainwashed.

A preference for something should not be viewed as a shortcoming on the part of the people who prefer it, just a not understandable thing to you.

So I guess this was an unbelievably long response to your blog post.
Apologies for that.
KK

Open... You may be a Unix guru Frankly I don't know what you know. X-Windows... a windowing system for Unix. Happy. You also don't know what I know, or the experience I have, so don't be presume.

I will humor you... started with punch cards in the 70's; have studied Fortran, Pascal, Cobol. Still write code on occasion, mostly VB, some C# and C++. HTML, XML, JavaScript, HTML... yes that too. Built a few networks, have had my head and hands inside, many, many boxes. Spent a few month is giant raceways, install UTP, before I attended University... so I am really good with a BIX and 110 punch down tools. Fiber termination, mechanical or using a fusion splicer... yes I have done that too; both single and multimode. Switches, routers, been there, done that. Built computer first in 1988 from a junk pile in a retail store while waiting for a colleague who was late... Why just wanted to see, if I could, and get it to post... it did.

Am I a Unix guru? No, I have messed around with different builds for fun... I have used Hardened Unix firewalls, mail servers, bastion host, and a server that ran a customized POS system in multi-million dollar businesses. Windows... yes, Enterprise System Admin. Mac that too... I have even seen a few crash repeated. I have seen plenty of Windows blue screens, and replace the Unix POS system a Windows bases system, after the box locked, the company that supplied it when belly up, and all the local Unix "guru" couldn't resurrect it.

I am not particularly fond of academics, because of the aforementioned "smartest guy in the room" thing that goes on with too many of them that I have interacted with, so no ACM, NEVER. Funny thing is, the one true brilliant academic I had the pleasure of knowing, is noting like that. Another thing about academics, is they seem to always engage in the wrong conversation. Kind of like how you missed the statement I made, twice, that a Mac is a "very good" computer, and have turn this into a MAC versus Bill Gates thing. So Again, a Mac is a very good computer, end to end; I just don't believe the are better than sliced bread. This post was not about bashing Mac computers... IMHO Apple's best product. But if you want to know what the best computer(s) is... it the one that does what you want or need, for the lowest opportunity cost and / or $. It's going to be different for every individual, and different for every application... the availability of software to meet your need is a big thing, since most will want to do something with their computer after it posts.

This post was a rant about a position I don't agree with... to borrow itjust4u's statement, that the world revolves around Apple. I'm an not a "just fall in line, and get with the program" type of guy; you may have noticed this. According to the world of Apple, you are guided to the store to get help... that what they suggest and promote. You go to the store, and then they tell you need an appointment, then give you the pompous Apple attitude. I guess that is the playbook. Sorry I didn't drink the Kool-Aid, so I checked my playbook, and what it said was, "If I pay you the fucking money, you dance for me, I don't dance for you! Perhaps I should have ended the post that way. Live and learn for me, I guess.

Oh and device drivers, is how the OS speaks to devices like hard drives, NIC cards, and accessories connected to a box... like a printer, but you already know this. Unless the company that built the bank grade Unix security products that I used (they claimed to have their own Unix gurus, and the Common Criteria folks seemed to agree), were lying to me, Unix needs device drivers too. Apple OS is based on BSD, is not? And speaking of printers...that was a huge part of Microsoft's success... businesses were no longer limited to purchasing printers that worked with WordPerfect and Lotus 123, the could buy what ever they wanted. Way back when, a printed output was still the main end game. Look at that... give people what they want, and with a clunky product, you can get 90% + market share for 10 years. Like I said... it is always a trade off.

    Quoting KItkat1415:
    Khu,
your disagreement with OpenAgenda seems interesting to say the least.

    KK
Kitkat my kids wanted iPods because all their friends were getting them.. so for Christmas and birthdays that what they got. I say it is like a cult because of the fervor people have for the products. My FWB had problems with her iPhone 4, got an brand new 5, had endless problems with the new phone, and complained about it daily for month. Still love the thing.

I have seem other friends got so frustrated with their iPhone, that they have thrown it across the room. But they still love their iPhone, cracked screen and all. My rant was about my experience in the Apple Store, and the attitude that seem to surround the product and company. I call it like I see it... and like I said, Macs are very good computers, I would own one if the price was lower (Mac Pro). iPhone, iPad, iPod. Come to think of it, I don't even recall seeing a Mac in the store.
