Freedom…
defined as: the state of being free or at liberty rather than in confinement or under physical restraint.



In any society with rules of conduct (written or unwritten), is it possible for any of us to be truly free in any aspect of life, or even sexually for that matter?

 I don't think we can ever be truly free.
Another more psotive view of freedom is the ability to fulfill one's own potential. This view requires redistribution of power and wealth from the rich to the poor.
The rich are free to do more than the poor even when not confined.

When you're invested in something, you give up a bit of freedom, or a lot of it. You OWE something, and have obligations.

Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose
Nothin', don't mean nothin' hon' if it ain't free

When you bump the bottom, you owe no one and nothing is expected of you. You very nearly cease to exist in the reckonings of the crowd around you. I think this is freedom but it comes with a cost. Buddha teaches this- the eradication of expectations. Disengagement in order to achieve understanding.

 Nope... we arent free... not completely. Too many rules and judgments to ever really be free in every way.

If I were a hermit living in the woods 500 miles from the nearest person, I might think differently

An interesting view TC, and very true... to steal an economic term, there are always "barriers to entry" to realize one's true potential.

That my friend is the conundrum... to approach true freedom, we must give freedom; and when freedom is given to someone else, they may decide a course of action that infringes on our freedoms.

The golden rule as it is called... "do onto other", is just being more and more legislated, so that others can also enjoy the same level of freedom. For example, women, visible minorities, LGBT etc.

Just think, if the internet was around 60, 70, 80 years ago, would we be able to do what we do on this website... or would someone like Joseph McCarthy be stocking us with tar and feathers, or worse.

I don't agree with that. I think in the big picture it has been a trade off... loose some freedoms to get others.
