World Cup… Time for Bling, Bling

World Cup… Time for Bling, Bling

The World Cup, the international football (soccer) competition begins this Thursday June 12, in Brazil. Brazil happens to be the country that has had the most success, hoisting the cup 5 times. My home country Canada has never won, we don’t even really get in the tournament, appearing only once in 1986. We do hockey!

Since Canada is never in it, Canadian football fans can’t cheer for the home side, so the fall back is to cheer for your country of origin, or whoever the hell you want. So World Cup time always announces its arrival by the flying of colours. Way back when I was a , it was some 20something male, hanging out the window of a car, waving a flag, while the driver of the car drove around honking his horn after their team won a game. We still get a taste of it every year with hockey, if Canadian teams go deep into the Stanley Cup playoffs.

But like everything else, things progress, and someone enhances the practice with a new prop… enter the car flag. They just clip onto your car windows, you put the window up and voila, no more tickets for hanging out of your car. You can show your colours all day and all night, as long as your side survives.

Canada is a multicultural society, and no place is the cultural diversity on display like the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), especially in Mississauga where I live. As we have gotten closer and closer to the big event, you see more and more flags… for sure I expect to see the English, Italian and German flags, the Baltic States Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia are in this time around. Of course other European flags will be seen; French, Dutch (Netherlands), Spain, Portugal, Greece etc., a few African, and powerhouse nations from South America… Brazil, Argentina, Colombia. Today I am driving around and I see this…

Then I see another car decked out the same way, this time with a Mexican flag on the hood. Nope, this is not custom work; a quick search of the internet confirmed that. I’m sure I will see more countries represented in this manner in the coming weeks.

Do people do this where you live… bling-up their cars to show their support for their side?
Do you only see colour flying for the country you reside in, or do you get the cultural cross-section I see?
Do you do this to your own vehicle?

For just a second, I thought you meant paint the flag on our asses. We don't but I sort of wish we did.
Won't that be a treat. Football fans everywhere walking around bare assed.

In the cultural centre of Canada, Winnipeg, the vehicles are already decked out with their ancestral country flags in celebration of the "beautiful game". The bars will be packed watching as soccer (aka football is huge here). Each win will be celebrated by honking horns and flowing flags through our streets and avenues.

btw Internationally, Canada's winter game is curling.

We see the flags a lot here....mainly when the inter county Gaelic games are being played.

People do jazz their cars up to show what team they're supporting in the World Cup.
But for this World Cup, expectations of England doing well are very low so there aren't very many St George's flags flying from cars this time ... so far! But things may quicly change if England beat Italy on Friday/Saturday in the Amazon.

So it happens in the Peg too. Canada is pretty dominant at curling too... but everyone know the T. is the center of the hockey universe, even though we can't win the cup or get in the playoffs anymore.

Some of the lower class people in our country only have their patriotism in sports to give their lives meaning so they do but most self-respecting aussies keep it to their loungeroom/sitting room.

Many cultures make up Australian society so we do see a lot of different countries flags flying and cars decorated in support of their country of origin.

I don't own a car but if I did, I'd never decorate it in such a way.
Not so here... you see them on prestige vehicles (BMW, Mercedes and Landrovers), as much as on regular domestic and foreign cars. A gentleman around the corner from me actually has a window flag on each window of his X5.

England's faith could all change base on this one game, stranger things have happened. I can remember when Cameroon got a performance of a lifetime from Roger Milla, and they made it to the quarter-finals in 1990.

Keep the faith.

I forgot you are a lover of the "beautiful game". Who are you cheering for, and who do you think will win?

V, I like the Beautiful game, but I would chose what you are doing daily (golf), over watching the World Cup.
