Men, What Colour Attracts Women…
Men, What Colour Attracts Women… This is a longish post. It is said, “Clothes make the man”, but could the colour of the clothes be just as or even more important. If you are a fashionista, then you are no doubt familiar with the theory of insuring your clothing complements your physical attributes, not just how it hangs, but the colour too. If you are blonde or have a light complexion, stay away from having extremely dark colours near your face. Stick to colors like gray or navy, or soft muted colours like, pink, lavender and soft yellow, and choose ivory over white. If you are a red head, warm colours like chocolate browns and olive greens, complement you well. If you have dark hair and a complexion to match, then you can brighten things up; white, blue, red, orange and green, as well as jewel tone colors. If you have brown hair, you can get away with most colours, but brown, earth tones and greens work well for you. Now fasionistas follow advice handed down from the fashion industry, which typically tend to change their mind with the wind. But if you goal is to attract the opposite sex, you may want to hold up on getting your colours done. You may want to consider what researchers have discovered, before you drop some serious coin on a new wardrobe. Researchers at the University of Rochester and a few other academic institutions have studied this, and despite the protestation of many on my blog post Secrets To Know About Women, RED is color that sexually attracts women to men. I was able to find the paper from the University of Rochester, and here is what they did. They conducted a series of 7 separate types of experiments to gage how the color red influenced the perception of attractiveness, likeability, desire to date, desire to have sex, and status of the subject in a photo. The subject photo was different from experiment to experiment, but was consistent within each experiment. Participants participated in only one of the series of experiments, and were advised that what was being studied was first impressions. All participants saw only one photo. With the first experiment, it was a black and white photo of a reasonably attractive man shown against either a red background (10 participants) or a white background (11 participants), for a 5 second period. Participants were asked to rate the attractiveness of the man on a 1-9 Likert scale with 1 being “not at all attractive” and 9 being “extremely attractive”. On average the man was rated as 6.79 against the red background, and 5.67 against the white background. To ensure the color preference is indeed gender based and not human base, another experiment was conducted in England consisting of 25 males and 32 females. Again the women rated the picture against the red background higher than against the white background; with the male participants there was no significant difference between the two. More experiments were conducted across the United States, China, England and Germany, using a black and white picture against a red vs. a gray background, and also a red vs. a green background, this time the participants were asked to not only rate on attractiveness, but also about sexual attraction, likability, and status (works as a doctor, or works as a street cleaner). There is a whole bunch of science behind the background choices, I will spare you the details, but if you really want to get into it, ooogle “Red, Rank and Romance in Women viewing Men”. Anyway, whatever way they manipulated the background that a black and white photo was show against, or manipulated the color of a plain shirt with color photos, red made the favorable first impression, with the subject always being judged, more attractive, sexually desirable, likeable and higher in status. So what gives? One plausible explanation is we (or I should say women), are conditioned to associate red with romance, sex, lust, power and status. From red roses and wine, lipstick and strawberries… when little girls draw hearts they are red. Red is the color associated with love and passion. If I say to you the lady in red, the red light district or the red light special (love that song), what are you thinking about? The blue light special… not so much. At the most posh affairs, guests walk the red carpet. Classical Romans called the most powerful men in the city, coccinati—“the ones who wear red”. Red was the color worn by kings, cardinals and judges across Europe. So there you have it ladies and gentlemen… although you may not want to have your man dress like Howard Wolowitz, some red in the outfit or as a backdrop will be well received… at lease so says science; on average anyway. My first wife who was born in Tampico, and reminds me so much of Gloria in MODERN FAMILY, always wanted to have me dress in red shirts. I also love a lot of reds in my home and furnishings. Women, I think, are much more swayed by Charisma, money, and power than the clothes we wear...but I think This sex is psychologically much deeper and more intellectual unaware of their own sexual urges--in general--than most men are. We get wood, and want a release. Most women I've known, need to be "stoked" and need to have the fire built slowly until it bursts into passion.

Umm... my issue with this is they showed a black and white portrait against a red BACKGROUND or a white BACKGROUND. Of course anybody would go for the red background. It's more adventurous. Reminiscent of velvet. Sultry. Sensual. Hot. Black and white portrait against a white background? Blah. That said: I've never ever been attracted to a guy in a red shirt lol. Maroon, yes, because it's one of my favorite colors and I wear it a lot But... I just don't see their study as conclusive. And I'm with kinkyfem: Men is black are sexy OK: I just read the paragraph about the 2nd study lol (I love reading but skim blogs if they get long-ish at all)... I still think my answer stands. As for "find your color"... to quote a coworker "If a man tells you how wonderful the color looks on you: Keep it" lol. I get the most compliments nowadays in Turquoise and certain oranges. Which is rather shocking as I've been a jewel tone person all my life.

Perhaps red is a colour which attracts attention hence, when used as a background, more people would find the picture attractive. However I still wouldn't want a man who wore a lot of it....maybe a red tie for a formal do but that's about it. ~~Anais Nin~~

Interesting post. The research looks very sound as it was done in different countries and between men and women. Red is also seen as a very lucky colour in China, and forbidden at funerals. Red is also the colour that comunnists and socialists often rally around. Red also means danger. It's interesting that traffic lights across the world use red to mean stop.

The red findings are contrary to some bloggers' preferences of late. See intendediversion's recent blog entry and female responses for further info.

Not everyone will have the same visceral reaction to red, but the trend of the findings speak for themselves. The big point is red will not make a woman attracted to a man. What the research is suggesting is that all other things being equal, as far as qualities that attract, some red will enhance the attraction. Two very different things. The red findings are contrary to some bloggers' preferences of late. See intendediversion's recent blog entry and female responses for further info. Just like possessing a long thick cock by itself will not make a man desirable to all women on the website, there is no silver bullet. But it appears that some are looking at this topic that way.
