Tampering with Memories … The Photoshopping of America

There is lots of conversation regarding the fact that images of women are routinely “perfected” with the help of technology. Media executives and content producers continue to use digital techniques and vehemently defend their actions as perfectly acceptable; never mind that the feminine ideals they put forth of a tanned, slender body, with no unsightly bumps, bulges or cellulite is unobtainable.

The practice of digitally altering images to fit ideals is creeping into other areas… it is into creeping to high school yearbooks; you heard me correctly. The way it is creeping in is not in way you would expect, but there is a deliberate attempt to alter the appearance of young ladies to fit “ideals”. The place where this is happening is Heber City, Utah, at Wasatch High School. The school has a modesty dress code covenant, so they have seen fit to use Photoshop to digitally “cover-up” portions of photos appearing in the yearbook, where they believe the female student is showing too much skin. Naturally the students who have been covered up are not pleased, as the cover-up has been arbitrarily applied, and is inconsistently applied. School official say the student know the dress code, and signs at the photo session warned them that their pictures could be edited.

Are you cool with this, or do you feel things are just spiraling out of control with trying to have women fit someone else’s ideals?

I am thinking it is out of control. It is tough to teach kids values when they see this kind of thing going on. My vote would be, leave the pictures alone.

Pal, it does seem thing are getting a little out of control, with attempts to spin things to a certain point of view.

It in their "modesty code", you must have sleeves and no exposed cleavage, and they feel they can impose their will after the fact. It crazy the extent they will go too.

Yes it is, but still this is a sad sign of the times.

I guess if the students were told about this, I guess it's okay. But I don't see the point of it all.

Pretty soon all photos will have to have a disclaimer attacked... "likeness may not be exactly as depicted". We could kind of use that right now here on VisionPersonals.com.

It's all about making the students conform to what someone feels is an appropriate dress standard. Lots of schools do it with the use of uniforms, this school is using Photoshop on year book pictures. The real issue is who own your image.

I would be interesting if some challenged this legally, over the issue of who has rights over the student's photo images. This whole keeping young ladies "pure" movement no doubt.

The religious right in the US of Eh! has had that sign since their inception. Tis only Photoshop that is of recent "times".

When virtue and modesty enlighten her charms, the lustre of a beautiful woman is brighter than the stars of heaven, and the influence of her power it is in vain to resist.

I'm a realist, and life in itself is somewhat a distorted dream, so...in essence it doesn't bother me at all. Eye candy won't give me type 2 diabetes, and I understand how everyone wants to look better than they actually do in real life. It's sorta' let the buyer beware. Some people drink, others use drugs, things are done in real time too, to distort what we see and what grabs us by the crotch. ..With friendship hangin' out, dave

No doubt it is the influence of the religious right. But well before the year book picture was taken, the bare shouldered student would have had her bare shoulder on display. If they school does have a strict modesty code in effect, shouldn't they have dealt with the student's outfit before the picture was taken? It just strikes me as a weak kneed way to enforce their view.

Guess on "photo day", the school photographer had an option, not to take her photo, or to take it and photoshop it.

No doubt there may have been a "double standard" for what could be worn to attend classes and what could be worn to appear in the year book.

If you read the full article, you would see the news paper "reporter" was stretching the story for sensationalism.

Just about every news story is sensationalized. It's shouldn't be up to the photographer, since that individual is just there to take pictures. It should be school officials. Likely they didn't want to police it that way and face a backlash for the students, and more importantly the parents of the students.

They opted for the Photoshop method, and then use the "it too expensive to have the year book reproduced" excuse, which as I said is lacking in testicular fortitude.

If the school wants to have draconian rules, then the need to enforce them consistent and do it up from. The "modesty code", is allegedly in place to help teach the kids to conform to an office environment dress codes once they are in the working world.

What this incident is teaching the kids is how to be sneaking, underhanded and use back doors when you have the power. A much more powerful lesson.
