Rant – Spelling and Grammar

This is a long-ass profanity filled rant! So, if you’re in a hurry or easily offended (this rant is definitely intended to offend some, or at least to say, “Hey cut it out”), just move along. If you read it, your comments are welcomed.

Ah, spel-ing and gram-er! I wanted to get you hear, you know who you are, the spelling and grammar gestapo. You were probably breaking into hives or having a little chuckle at the first sentence, weren’t you; thinking this illiterate bastard can’t spell. Well I can’t, can’t write either, easily my weakest academic area. There are probably many 6th graders who could put me to shame; then again, there are probably some National Spelling Bee contestants, who can shame you. But, What The Fuck! You’ll notice I wrote that out for you, instead of using the short form WTF. I do want to point out, phonetically, the first sentence was not error filled. I’m sorry, when it comes to the written word, I consider myself functional illiterate and dyslexic, circular in my presentation, and I use the word “that” way too often, but let me back up just a bit.

Reading another post yesterday, where a lady is talking about, as she puts it, another “Arrogant Jackass” messaging her, requesting that she drop everything that evening and come for a ride on the hobby . Now the poster, who professes to have some writing skills, recounts verbatim the conversation she had with said “Arrogant Jackass”. The poster makes no mention of any spelling or grammar mistakes on the part of the “Arrogant Jackass”, but sure enough, the spelling and grammar gestapo arrive and want to dazzle us with their words of wisdom. The first portion of the gestapo’s comments, a rant, about “Arrogant Jackass” not being able to spell. The mistake, drum roll please,… typing “yiur” for “your”. Shoot the illiterate bastard quick!

Now if you look down at your QWERTY keyboard, you will notice the letter “i” and “o”, are side by side on the keyboard; could it be an innocent keyboarding error?

Writing is a form of communication not a measure of intelligence. The 2 do not have a one to one correlation. Look it up, but may I suggest that when you do, you read academic papers to form your opinion. To be able to communicate effectively with the written word, grammar and spelling does help, so does being succinct, and a bunch of things everyone is not equally skilled at. Now before you get on the “well they should be” bandwagon, do you know HTML, CSS, XML, javascript? … No? Well you should, you use them every day to communicate; … you’re using it right now. They are the basic fucking languages of this website and the internet as a whole. You don’t have the aptitude to grasp it… the need or will to learn it … you just use it. Right. Does it make you somehow less intelligent, because you don’t understand the basic structural building blocks for something you depend on every day; and I might add, a communicative medium no less? I didn’t think so. And just in case, you are still on the whole spelling thing, spell check can be turned off on the browser the person happens to be using, English may not be their first language, they could be in a hurry, or perhaps they just made a fucking mistake! I know, I know, you’re perfect and never make mistakes. Just an F.Y.I. (sorry, that’s the short form of “For Your Information”) spelling is not as important as you think when it comes to our ability to communicate with the written word. Don’t believe me? Well let me give you a link to a post that will demonstrate it. Here it is; now you need to right click on this link and open it in a new windows or tab, I don’t want you to lose were you were in this great post. Annoying isn’t it when someone pompously points out shit you fucking don’t need guidance on.

I don’t mean to get on the member who lit my wick with the spelling critique. The comment they left was one of the most benign spelling and grammar critiques I have come across, and at least had some relevance to the discussion at hand, as was the rest of their comment. A lot of the comments I see from the spelling and grammar gestapo, are nothing but critiques about spelling and grammar.

This site professes to be many things, “The World's Largest Sex Dating Site & Swinger Personals Community” for one; it is right there at the top of each page. Nowhere does it say, this is an academic literary site, where you can have your writing ability or lack thereof (in my case) red inked, and critiqued. Even if the writer is an illiterate fuck, when we choose to, we can all read too! I (and I think it’s safe to say everyone else) don’t need the benefit of your “superior intellect” continually pointing out other peoples spelling and grammar mistakes. THANK YOU VERY, VERY, MUCH. We get it, it annoys you, and you will not consider dating anyone who can’t spell or write with proper grammar. Fine then, if the post you are commenting on is critiquing a would-be suitor’s spelling and grammar ability, then have at it, enjoy yourself. But do you have to cruise through the blogs critiquing everyone’s spelling and writing ability, when that is not the topic at hand? I for one would rather have someone leave a comment filled with spelling and grammatical errors, than have them leave no comment at all because they fear being belittled by the spelling and grammar gestapo. If I can’t read it, guess what, I just move on to the next comment. If it hits your blog, you have that magic “Delete This Comment” link. So does every other blogger in blogland.

If you are annoyed by this post, good, I wrote it with that intent, and chose the appropriate graphics to drive this point home. So Dr. Sheldon Cooper, put away your red teacher’s pen, and stop weeping for humanity, because someone made a spelling or grammar mistake.

This rant was brought to you by one man who finds writing more challenging than other forms of communication. No teachers were harmed in preparing this post. My mother, x-wife, several relatives and friends are teachers. I love them all.

Rant Over.

I did yesterday, when I penned this rant. I wasn't sure I was going to post it. But sure enough late last night, reading blogs and there they are again. Gestapo! Is the content of someone's comment not more valuable?

No! No! No! your opinion is not lowly! There is always that dance between what is the norm and what is not. LOL, is OK by most people's standard, drives some people crazy. Your personal standard is your standard, we all have them. But when someone leaves a comment and all another commenter has to say about it is "learn to spell", is that really what we want the blogs to be about.

I think the key words you used in your comment were "an attempt at normal correspondence". For the writer who sent the message to you, it is how they normally correspond. I don't think they are sitting there tying a message thinking... let me dumb this down a bit, I don't want to come off as too intelligent. It may not meet your minimum standards, but beating them up for it is flat out mean, don't you think? That's what the spelling and grammar police are doing in my eyes.

I too struggle with grammar and spelling - I believe the idea is the message intent - yes I know that its wrong to right "thats" but so does the reader who wants to correct it... does that reader not get the message because I forgot a punctuation mark?
George, we are like minded! Content, content, content, that's the important thing. That age old argument, form vs. substance.

Pal, you are so right! What fun is there in having your comments red inked for form and the substance of the comment ignored.

Great rant McHue!!

Spelling and grammar are important to me, as in, my own spelling and grammar. But being far from perfect, spelling mistakes in the form of typos are not unusual, hey, I live with it. Occasional bad grammar, I can be prone to that, hey, who can't be. But persistent bad grammar is shocking bad, and by that I'm refeering to a scottish tendencey to mis-use past participles such as 'I seen' and 'I done'. Drives me batty!

Having said that, if I see or hear bad english, well, who am I to point it out? I always remember the phrase 'no one likes a smart arse'! How true!

As for your mastery of the language, I can't see that you have much to worry about.

Or did I mean 'masturbatory'?? In which case perhaps you do have something to worry about??

Masturbatory would be correct I believe. Show of hands, who likes to be publically called to the mat for our shortcomings ... Anyone? Bueller, Bueller?

But I guess in a way this rant has done that.

My experience is that pointing out spelling and grammar issues are only ever a form of attack..... and you have to question why that attack is deemed necessary..... and the "problem" always lies with the one criticizing, not the one making the error. Some people enjoy getting a bit aggressive for no good reason..... probably not getting laid enough

Saying that I can't cope with messages entirely in "tx spk".......

I don't ever get excited about spelling mistakes on here. Half the time the spell checker isn't working anyways. You have to remember most first language isn't English either for posters.. Some people don't have a life on here and write just for the sake of writing to get you to read there blog. All I can say is keep smiling! hugs V

Alicia, definitely a form of attack; almost troll like behavior.

Text speak short form can be challenging to adapt to. When I joined the site, my profile go a lot of views from locals that had this strange text speak word, BBC, in their profile. I actually had to look it up in the urban dictionary. They all were disappointed and moved on

So no, I'm not getting laid enough. Was that an offer

I did enjoy reading this post; I happen to agree with most of what you have written. I will try to keep my response short, so it does not seem like a novel.

Every individual has their own strengths and weaknesses; even some geniuses have a problem with syntax, which is why those persons will have someone else help them put their thoughts into print.

I too have always struggled with grammar while writing, but with technology being what it is today, one would think everyone would be using it to better their writing skills. Then again, proof reading is a must, because often the mind is much faster than the fingers and the spelling/grammar checkers are not always accurate.

Then there are the regional and cultural differences in the way one speaks and writes.

By the way, I even enjoyed looking for your spelling and grammatical mistakes; whether it was or was not your intention, it is what makes you, you; and I still enjoyed this post.

Hi V Normally, when I read the comment of a gestapo member, there is just a few expletives going through my mind as I shake my head. But as I wrote, the incident from yesterday somehow hit a nerve. It actually took me a while to figure out the egregious error the “Arrogant Jackass” had made (would it be funny if the typo was on the part of the blogger). When I finally found the error, finger started across the keyboard with this post. Late in the day more from the spelling and grammar squad, and it post time.

Don't worry, I'm still smiling! Enough nice, normal, witty people here to make sure of that.

Yes sir! If the technology didn't exist (spelling, grammar, proof reading), I would have an even more difficult time participating in the forum. Fortunately, I am much more adept with the technology than the written word. My mind works much faster than I can possibly type, and I'm a decent typist.

If its a long post or response, I pump it in Word, then a little text to speech playback for proofreading. Cut and paste. Still I find mistakes after I post something.

You'd have to feel sorry for those who spend their time looking for people to attack on this site....they must have no lives at all. I know I make a lot of typos here....my fingers don't always do what I expect of them....I couldn't really care less if that upsets anyone else....after all my mistakes don't hurt anyone.

I am one of the fortunate ones in that writing and spelling is easy for me, although I still make occasional errors here and there, especially as I am getting older, more tired, etc. That said, I rarely correct others on their writing because I find it rude. I wouldn't want the pretty girls making fun of me for being ugly, or the skinny girls making fun of me for being fat,

By the way, despite your protestations otherwise, I find you are quite adept with written language.

Thank you my friend. I too should be addressing the corrective lens issue, instead of doing the glasses up or down, depending on the device I am interfacing with.
