Algebra is like Sex

Here I am again with more time on my hands than lotion and thought I'd share something I've learned in this short life (47 is just getting started).
I have had the good misfortune (yes, you read that correctly) of having to teach algebra to young and not so young adults. I always started the class with "Algebra is like Sex" and after the laughter died down from those with less self control I would add "for those who were laughing, that's why you are dateless - you don't know how to 'perform' algebra." which generally brought laughter from those with more self control. This, of course, was an 'attention getter', crucial to the success of any Instructor but in addition it also was a simple yet effective learning/memory strategy. "Algebra is like sex, what you do to one side you must do to the other side (of the equals sign) and there is an order of operation. (PEMDAS)" More peals of laughter would typically ensue to which I would say again, "This is why your dateless. Learn algebra and improve your sex life!"

Now I can imagine many of you screaming at your computer screen, 'there is no order of operation when it comes to sex and if you approach sex like algebra then I'm outta here' but please remember, I was teaching an algebra class not a sex class....wait...now that I think of it...hmmmmm.... there's an 'untapped' market, but I digress.
Sex indeed does have an order of operation but the order is as unique to person as there are people. The same can be said for solving algebraic problems, many times the steps (read algorithm) used to solve one problem will not work for the next problem and anyone who has taken an algebra course knows this to be true. I maintain "Algebra is like Sex!"

If I get enough interest perhaps I'll teach a class again.

 Having taught algebra myself, I appreciate the concept... although in sex there are a lot of inequalities - but with the right manipulation, you can turn the tables...

All inequalities and non-linear equations aside, thank you for your kind comment. Good to know there are some math instructors with a sense of humor not as dry as chalk dust.
