Wet Towel!

For those who have listened to the recent Budget, you would have realised our ever conscientious government has increased the already expensive potable water to another 30% and to make it more palatable to the public, have introduced a slew of water experts and specialist to suggest that 30% is insufficient to make the public appreciate the value of water in this drought dessert nation of ours. The experts are clamouring for 200% to 500% increase in tap water tax thus making the 30% increase seem justifiable blessing to accept.

So where is the justification for increase in water prices?
If it is reservoir too depleted? Nope, all reservoirs are filled to the brim at 100% capacity.
Do we need additional desalination plants? Nope. None extra had been planned and none built. Even then desalination using oil at its lowest price per barrel does not justify an increase in cost.
How about increase in immigrant population causing higher demand for potable water? Well that may seem to be the logic until you think, who was responsible to open the floodgates for letting every Tom Dick and Harry into this tiny nation that resulted in overcrowding and stressing the public transport system. Yup! You know who. He who shall not be named. But engineering wise, processing water is a scalable commodity and thus profits will still be ensured with higher demand without increasing price.
Maybe it is because we increase administrative cost. Yup! That could very well be the reason. Since when did we last raise our minister'a salary by another million for making our nation number 1? Number 1 most expensive city in the world. No 1 most expensive nation to own and drive a car. And now, we are in progress to being the number 1 most expensive public water in the world.

Maybe it is not the cost of the water that was the crux of the matter but the lesson that the nation needed to learn about the value of water and how precious it is, to help us appreciate water is more valueable than gold? Ah... then I am sure that justifies the increase because the. It does not need any reason for accounting for price increase except for our benefit to appreciate the value of water.

Thus a cup of coffee at $1.20 would now be priced at $1.60 for the water increase and another $1.00 for washing the cup after you drank the coffee.

A bowl of noodle soup at $3.00 would now be priced at $3.90 (30% increase) plus another $1.00 for washing value.

Imagine the public pool entry fee of $1.50 would be now costing $5.00 because of the large usage of pool water as well as the shower and toilet facilities.

Imagine the knock on effect on the economy increasing GDP by more than 30% and making this nation a higher GDP growth! Amazing!

I still wonder why the water fee charged on industries at $0.66 still have not changed significantly and these industries are not require to appreciate the value water in Singapore?

In the meantime, I will try to do my best to save water and thus save some money.
