Masked and Anonymous

When I lived in New York and had just started boosting my CD collection I would hear songs on the radio and go around trying to find out who the group or singers were.

I was still an internet novice then.

I used to hear people like Bruce Springsteen or The Who, or even Pink Floyd on the radio, and they sounded wicked (that means “awesome” in my way of speaking); then I would go out and get the CD and play it at home and I just couldn’t feel it.

I always wondered how the radio DJ would get so worked up about Springsteen or Dylan yet when I put them in my player they sounded so ‘so-so’.

Of course, as I’ve said before, I used to buy CD’s, listened them for a few days and then they get parked. Never to be played again. I’ve since come to the decision that with hundreds of CDs I don’t need to buy another.

But I do have to comment on this. Some years ago, before I left New York, I heard a song from the CD “Masked and Anonymous” on the radio, and the DJ was going off about what a great CD it was. Naturally, I went out and bought it. Played it once and cursed myself for wasting my money.

Cut to now, 10 years later; I hear this song on my IPod for the first time and I’m wondering who the hell is this? I checked, and it’s from “Masked and Anonymous.”

I’m just realizing that though written by Bob Dylan, the songs are actually interpreted by someone else. Well, that’s what driving in New York was like during rush-hour traffic: You’re hearing the music, but you’re not listening.

That’s my story; I’m stuck with it!

Sounds like you're feeling the same pain as I am.

Thousands of CDs and audio-cassettes that I'm almost certain I will never listen again. They're just too many; and all that money spent.

And I still have to fight that urge to buy more.

PS: "Masked and Anonymous" is really a soundtrack to a little comedy written by Larry Charles and Bob Dylan (under an assumed name.)

The songs, although written by Bob, were sung by various artists. This was long after he had kinda 'dropped' out of sight' and just after his son got popular with his band "The Wallflowers."

    ..Dylan is hard to mask.....

    Blue...
I heard another of the songs today. I keep thinking I should listen the entire CD in one sitting but then all the surprise would be gone. I think I will keep discovering them one at a time.
