MacCleaner/MacKeeper are not helpful for you. They may not do anything bad, but they'll bog down your system. As far as stuff like defragging etc., the Mac generally takes care of that itself. If you download software and try it out and are concerned about stuff left over from it, search for Hazel. It's awesome. Throw an app in the trash and it tells you what else is still on the computer from it and asks if you want to throw that away too. For anti-malware stuff, Sophos has a free download. Just run it once in a while, don't let it run all the time. This had been Mac Moment with Scott.

A new one would be cheaper than getting the old one fixed.

See what's eating up all of your memory: videos, music, photos are the biggest culprits. Get a program like TuneUpMyMac to clean it of extraneous junk files. Then check your operating system and other applications. You may have to move some files to external thumb drives, etc. Back up all of your files...just in case. Never ignore those who care for you you will have lost diamonds while you were collecting stones

sometimes laptops and pcs do collect junk, some virus programs allow you to clean ups, but be careful not to get one that will do harm, check with cnet or pc mags for suggestions, and then be ready to pay for the full cleanup
