Whippoorwills
Whippoorwills What is a Whippoorwill (or sometimes shown as whip-poor-will)? It's aforest bird found mainly in the Eastern US and Southeastern Canada. So you are probably wondering why on earth I would write about a whippoorwill in my blog. Well we have lived here for almost 11 years and each spring our local whippoorwill returns to his home here in our woods. Have any of you ever heard a whippoorwill? It is named for the sound it makes....literally. Over and over again, this bird chirps "whip-poor-will" with a strong accent on the first and third syllables and a tremolo (like a vibration) in the second. It actually sounds quite pretty at first. One thing you need to know about this bird though...it is NOCTURNAL...yep...comes to life at night. So that pretty sound gets pretty annoying when you go to bed and are trying to sleep!! Imagine having the windows open in your bedroom letting some nice, fresh spring air in (of course after a long winter everyone enjoys letting the spring air in when it gets warm enough) and hearing this bird for hours at a time!! Each year for 10 years now we have lived with the whippoorwill...believe it or not we have never seen it though. These birds, although predominantly heard are infrequently seen because of their nocturnal habits (it's not like we can go birdwatching in the evening). Also, their cryptic coloring keeps them very well hidden in the forests during the day. So if any of you ever hear the sound of the whippoorwill just remember, at least you were lucky enough to not end up with one living in your backyard singing it's song EACH and EVERY night. BTW....we also have a local woodpecker and an owl somewhere in the woods as well....hehehe....amazing that I can live that close to the nature of the forest and only be a mile away from the ocean as well LMAO Have a great day!!
