Local Radio Station Begins Playing Christmas Music

I think that I am as ecited and childish about Christmas as the next guy, but on November 7th, 92.l Lite FM had a coat drive and began the season of playing Christmas music. Isn't it a little too early? Doesn't it water down the specialness of the season to elongate it too much?

I grew up with the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade being on in our house and we held to the practice of their Santa ushering in the Christmas season. And on Thanksgiving night, you could count on the original version of Miracle on 34th Street being on. To this day, I still get teary eyed at the end.

In the weeks that followed brought the once a year opportunity to watch all the Christmas Specials. Wasn't it special to discuss with your friends the next morning that you had seen the show? Today, with VHS, DVD, DVR etc..., these shows and others are readily available at your slightest whim. And the Hallmark Channel has been broadcasting sappy Christmas movies since at least the summer.

I simply think that Christmas is special and for it to remain special it can not be stretched out into other seasons and holidays. As it is, Christmas is entitled to twelve days; December 25th through January 6th. We stopped practicing that with undecking our halls of holly immediately following the 25th. I liked the festive atmosphere and practice of keeping the house decorated until the Epithany.

Call me old fashion.

My husband bought Christmas wrapped M&Ms the other day. He complained that the price was up and the size of the bag is down. I told him he should have looked across the aisle, they have Halloween wrapped candy half price. Isn't an M&M an M&M no matter the color?

At least this is one thing we can't blame on schools. This one is definitely due to the commercial sector.

The thing I always notice about Christmas is there is all the build-up the weeks and days before, the anticipation, the hard work decorating and shopping and wrapping and hiding presents and so on, and then POOF!! - in 24 hours it's over!. I like the idea of the "12 days of Christmas" and will try it out this year. I understand that In the old days in England, Christmas was defined to last as long as the "Yule log" burned - so the servants would make sure that old Yule log was soaked through-and-through so it would take a good long time for it to burn up!
My son makes the fires in our house these days. He'd be like those servants, trying to make the holidays last and last.

We could change that if we all put an effort into it. But it would hurt the consumer more that the businesses.

At 18 I worked part time in a department store (John Wanamakers). I remember the first Holiday Season I worked there. We were all put on the schedule to work the friday after Thanksgiving (The term Black Friday had not been coined yet).

An army of decorators worked the wee hours of the morning to get the store ready for opening at 10:00AM. It was a magical transformation, it excited, it built anticipation. Today, I think the October arrival of seasonal decorations just serves to numb us to the season and the true spirit.

Now, on a personal sad note.... My husband has joined the masses that have totally edged out Thanksgiving. Yesterday he had my son get rid of the pumpkins and mums I had adorning my front porch. I admit they have been there for a while. I think I put them out just before Columbus Day. The hope each year is for them to last through Thanksgiving. An early freeze will sometimes kill the mums, and often the squirells make a meal of the pumpkins. This year, everything was still intact.

So, I asked why he got rid of my display. He told me that it was time to start preparing for Christmas. "What about THANKSGIVING???" I yelled loud enough to damage an eardrum. He just stood there looking bewildered, "Oh, I forgot."

My mums are in the compost pile and the pumpkins are sitting in my son's airsoft gun target range. Oh well, I guess it is just a different type of Thanksgiving display.
