Though research suggests that happily married couples enjoy longer, healthier lives than their single peers, the flip side is true, as well: A troubled marriage can drag down your well-being, making you more susceptible to chronic stress and other ills. Why? Interactions between you and your spouse have the power to either positively or negatively affect your cardiovascular, hormonal, and immune systems, notes Ted Robles, Ph.D., an assistant professor of psychology at UCLA who has done research on how marriage affects health. Marriage will make you live to be a hundred, feel like you're eighty and cry out for the sweet release of death. Or not.
