A PUSSY BOAT

The Japanese artist Megumi Igarashi has just been released from police custody after her arrest on obscenity charges. She was arrested for selling and distributing images of her genitalia, which is a crime in Japan.

Though released, the charges haven’t been dropped. If convicted of the charges, she could spend up to two years in prison and face a fine of 2.5 million yen ($24,655).

The artist, known as Rokudenashiko (meaning ‘good-for-nothing girl’), was selling 3D images of her pussy to raise money so she could build a kayak in the shape of her pussy using a 3D printer. In the words of a police officer, she was arrested for “distributing data that could create an obscene shape through a 3D printer”.

At a press conference, Megumi Igarashi said: “I had no idea why I had to be arrested and detained because I don’t believe my vagina is anything obscene. I was determined I would never yield to police power.”

The artist specialises in ‘deko-man’ art, which is a Japanese art movement based on the female body. She started making this art because, in her words, “I had not seen pussy of others and worried too much about mine”.

3D printing is sometimes known as additive manufacturing. It’s a way of making a three-dimensional object of almost any shape by a special robot that adds successive layers of material to create the object. Some people are heralding 3D printing as a new industrial revolution.

Almost anything can be made by 3D printing. Guns and raspberries have already been 3D-printed. In the not-so-distant future, people will be able just to manufacture things in their own homes.

Above is her pussy-shaped kayak before she went into the water, and below is the artist getting scanned before the kayak was 3D-printed.

Do you enjoy kayaking or canoeing?
Can you do an Eskimo roll?
Would you buy a 3D printer if you had the money?

No kayaking, but the occasional romantic canoe ride is fun. The cost would have to drop dramatically , but maybe I would buy one.

Yes, no and yes!
I live in an area that is very kayak friendly. It is a great way to get close to nature.

I'm not a kayaker or canoeist, but I would get inside that and do a few rolls.

I think 3D printing will be a very big thing.

Like most technological inventions, I suspect the price will drop for a 3D printer. This may be the future!

I have done canoeing but not yet tried kayaking, if the experience is similar in more ways than just the oars, i would love it.

I have never done or tried an Eskimo roll.

I would definitely buy a 3D printer if I could.
Kayaking is quite similar to canoeing, though perhaps a little more difficult to control on the water.
What would you make on your 3D printer?

I'd like to fully assess what mediums a 3D printer could work with, whether it could work with mediums such as glass, metal etc or only the resin that I've seen them working with on tv stories about them, then see what the limitations of the technology were and try to find ways of expanding them for medical uses, like artificial replacement limbs.
I'm no expert on 3D printing, but I think many materials can be used for making things.

I agree, canoeing and kayaking are great. I prefer a canoe to a kayak as it's a bit more paddle-able!

That lake looks beautiful. I have to make do with a crowded river In Nottingham for any canoeing or kayaking.

A 3D printer could be very useful. I'd be tempted to make a clone of myself!
