The Magic of a Smile

The Magic of a Smile

I’m addicted to smiles. I’m not talking about a pleasant grin, I’m talking about the kind of smile that touches you all of the way to the core and lasts for days. The kind of smile that creates a sense of warmth as it pervades every fiber of your being. Too many of us wait to find those smiles but I choose the much more rewarding path of creating them.

The easiest is a simple act of kindness, I love the way it feels to help a friend or a stranger. It can be as simple as words of support or lending an empathetic ear. In my professional life I do a lot of pro bono work for people that can’t afford my services and the occasional tears of appreciation have touched me very deeply.

One of my favorite sources of smiles is watching as my words of encouragement inspire a friend to spread their wings and reach higher. Sometimes that means changing the way they see themselves. Sometimes it means getting past the damage others have created. There is nothing more heartwarming than seeing someone special realize their dreams.

And then there is that very special feeling of having a magical friend in your life that creates a smile every time they cross your mind. The lyrics of Smile by Uncle Kracker capture the magic of that special smile perfectly.

You're better then the best
I'm lucky just to linger in your light
Cooler then the flip side of my pillow, that's right
Completely unaware
Nothing can compare to where you send me,
Lets me know that it's ok, yeah it's ok
And the moments where my good times start to fade

You make me smile like the sun
Fall out of bed, sing like a bird
Dizzy in my head, spin like a record
Crazy on a Sunday night
You make me dance like a fool
Forget how to breathe
Shine like gold, buzz like a bee
Just the thought of you can drive me wild
Ohh, you make me smile

The wonderful thing about having such a special friend is that you never have to look for opportunities to create smiles. You always have someone you can’t wait to touch with an act of kindness or remind just how special they truly are. You are always there to offer a caring nudge to get them back on track if they lose sight of their dreams. And you can be a source of reliable strength when the dark side of life encroaches.

And then there is one more smile, a very precious smile you cannot create on your own. I haven’t experienced this smile for a while but the times I have are permanently etched in my memory. I’m speaking of the very precious smile that lingers for days after an amazing night of passion. It is wonderful amalgamation of the closeness of your connection and the sheer joy of creating so much pleasure. It is that special smile that others can see even when your face lacks expression. For me, the greatest reward from sex isn't the most intense orgasm or checking another fantasy of my list, its creating this smile.

I’ll close with a question, “what makes your smile?”

Thank you for the wonderful addition to my post. You perfectly captured the way that a smile has a language that is all it's own and the way it can take your breath away when that unmistakable message is an invitation to get lost in me.

I remember that precious smile as well. What makes it so precious is that you can only truly experience it by creating the same smile in someone else.

I don't think I fully realized that until I just typed it. When I talk about having chemistry with someone what I'm really talking about is my ability to make them smile. It is also why accepting contentment is a form of self imprisonment.

The fact we have both experienced that in the past should reassure us that we have the qualities to create that smile in others and as a long time fan of yours I know you do. It will be one extremely lucky man to bring that precious smile back.

Great post as always. I took some time to give thought as to what truly makes/enables me to smile. I have always been wiser then my years, and very independent. With that independence comes responsibilities on every level, especially since I am single. I have been told I am and can be too serious and need to relax. And, a guy I dated many years ago noticed I didn't smile or laugh at sitcoms on tv. At that point I realized I was holding it in...the smiles and laughter not only on tv but in life. I have changed a lot since then. I find myself laughing at sitcoms all the time now. My cat must think I'm a nut case! LOL! I too like the simple things in life. Seeing the river on my way to work...it can be so beautiful in the morning. When I take vacations (ones where I actually go somewhere) I notice it takes a couple of days for me to feel fully relaxed. My smiles are plentiful then...when the worries and responsibilites are vacated for a while. I wish you could know me then.

I am an "eye girl" attracted to eyes first...but I bet seeing your smile would make feel all gooey and weak kneed.
As stressful as your job is I'm sure you need to remind yourself to relax and smile. I'm glad you can find the time to relax and get in touch with the giddy school girl side of you.

Your thought about the possible affect of my smile is very sweet, and it definitely gave me one. TY!

There is nothing more precious than a child's smile. The half grin half smirk is such a boy thing.

The little smile that lights up my face these days is a two-word text exchange from my favorite friend. It's just a simple way to let me know that he is thinking about me or me about him.

The smiles that go to my core are few and far between, but my kids are the ones that bring those on. As they get older and understand more of life's complexities, I really enjoy seeing them cut loose and have a giggle fit over something. I also enjoy watching them succeed at something they have worked exceptionally hard at accomplishing. I suspect I'll be doing that smile in the next day or so as I watch my gymnast compete at Nationals...win or lose, she makes me proud.
That wonderful smile of pride you have for your gymnast is already present in your words. Reaching that level is such an amazing accomplishment. Good luck and savor the preciousness of this special part of life's journey.

It's the little things in life that usually make me smile the biggest...The kids' sleepy bed heads at the breakfast table, the first morning cup of coffee, the birds singing in the morning.

A night of passion brings a very different kind of smile and one that spreads from my nose to my toes...

    Sweet post!
That is why I'm so happy that you are living the fairy tale. Your smile and your wonderful high spirits needed to be shared and that new family is so blessed to have you as part of it.

Your extreme act of kindness in supporting and promoting the T4T cause earlier week was very touching and it in part inspired this post.

Smiles aren't hard to find if you open your mind and your heart to them and many times the simplest things bring the biggest smiles. Like your daughter, my son has brought me more smiles than I could ever possibly count. I'm certain that the man that makes you smile considers that one of his greatest treasures.
