Years of receipts

Ironically, I'm spending my last day of vacation by organizing all of my personal finance paperwork. Of course, I'll be watching the games at the same time.

Once upon a time, I used to be really good at keeping my receipts, bills, and checks organized month-to-month. As soon as my bank statement would arrive, I'd collect up all of the month's paperwork, organize it, staple it together, and generally ensure that the numbers all added up.

Then I finally got a job in software development, with the paychecks that go along with it. Suddenly, I didn't have to track every penny. My lifestyle is such that I"m simply not going to spend everything I make. One one hand, it means that I live in a 350-square-foot condo. On the other hand, when I see a pile of great video games at a thrift store, I don't have to do some quick math to determine how many I can afford; I know I can buy all of them.

When you throw in bill auto-pay and paycheck direct deposit, my finances mostly run themselves. As a result, I've developed the bad habit of throwing my receipts and bank statements in a box and forgetting about them until, possibly, tax season. Combine that with the fact that I still have the habit of getting and keeping all of the sales receipts, the papers really pile up.

So, I have had my work cut out for me in sorting out the mess. I've sorted through 2012 and 2011, and I'm currently working on 2010. And, since the paperwork is stacked with the most recent on top, it's like going through time. I'm seeing receipts from the card shops were I was playing "Magic: The Gathering" in 2011, receipts from the grocery stores when I was living in a hotel room while waiting for my condo to close, receipts from the cafeteria in the old buildings where I used to work, and tons of paperwork involving selling my house in Vancouver and buying my condo here.

I sense a few foreach loops in here and my favorite gem..

while(succeed =! try());
