SO, WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENIN' ?
SO, WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENIN' ? SO WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENIN'? Statistically, the last two weeks in July, and the first two weeks in August are the hottest days of the year on the Mojave Desert. Yesterday--July 23, 2014--officially registered 119 degrees F. in Thermal, California. Where the F. is Thermal you ask? It's located about 60 miles to our SE down the mountains from where we live. It's in the Palm Springs zone of influence. Palm Springs, was officially at 116 degrees F., yesterday. The temperatures that are posted in these winter wonderland Snowbird destinations--Like Mecca, Palm Springs, Desert Hot Springs, Cathedral City, Coachella, Rancho Mirage, and even up the mountains here in Twentynine Palms, and Joshua Tree, are all given to the official record keepers by the various Chamber of Commerces... The Chambers of Commerce OF COURSE have an intimate monetary interest in keeping the summer temperatures as LOW in the the official records as possible. Too HIGH summer temperatures discourage visitors from all over the world from visiting this desert area during the summers, when the supply of money is needed to keep the visitor traps open. The WINTER flow of visitors is not a problem. People from all over the world stream into Southern California to enjoy our winter sunshine. 60 and 70 years ago, the Palm Springs area shut down during the hot summers. The restaurants and hotels simply closed their doors and put a sign in their windows saying they'd be open again after Labor Day in September. This isn't the case today. Better Air Conditioning, and more greedy business people, have encouraged most of the desert businesses to stay open year round. Oh well, it's none of my business but I DO find it all interesting... Meanwhile, it was 109 F. here yesterday... My little collie, Raggedy Ann, and I took a fairly long walk yesterday before the sun was fully up, from 5 to around 7 A.M. We discovered a large stash of used exterior grade plywood, and used two by fours, still in good condition, dumped about a mile from our house on the open desert. This dumping of used building materials in our area happens once or twice a year. Contractors don't want to pay the cost of taking the material to a land fill that charges for the material. Many of the contractors just drive out on the open desert where no one lives, and dump the stuff. I walked Raggedy Ann back home, where we both drank a quart of water. Then I put on my work gloves and drove my truck to the abandoned lumber, making sure I didn't get stuck in the sand. With about an hours work, I accumulated a nice stash of perfectly good lumber that only needs a few nails and screws removed to be perfectly good for the things I'm always building at my place. Raggedly Ann was sound asleep in her bed when I returned home. I was happy to get inside under the AC. The Rockford Files were just about ready to come on the TV, so I grabbed a nice cold glass of unsweetened Apple Juice, and sat down to enjoy the hot part of the day inside with M. and the sleeping Raggedy Ann... by David Stardust.... It's really hard to find anyone out here to do the sort of work I like to do. I'm always getting people asking me to work on their places for them, because I'm sort of a jack of all trades.. I always decline because I'm too busy keeping this place together. Finding things on the desert has always been a lucky thing for me. It's amazing to me about the good things a lot of the contractors throw away. Their entire philosophy is "time is money.." they compute how much they would have to pay to have someone pound out a few nails in lumber and if the don't like the figures, just dump the stuff.
