THINGS WE CAN'T FIX

THINGS WE CAN'T FIX

I like fixing things and solving problems. The majority of men I've been friends with are similar to me in their abilities to repair most of the things around the house, and to do most of the work on their own cars sitting out in the garage.

The years seem to flip by faster and faster for me, but still, it seems only a short time ago when teenage boys I knew, or heard about, occupied themselves fixing up some older car during the summer when they were off from school.

That no longer seems to be happening.

There have always been things in life we can't fix, and now the modern vehicle has become one of them. At least it's become one of the things the traditional home mechanic and do-it-your-selfer is shying away from. The complexity of the computer controlled circuits, and the special tools needed to work on the modern car successfully limits what the average guy can do.

M., drives a Ford Ranger that's a couple of years old, and the only thing she'll let me do on it is keep the tires up to 35 pounds, and check the fluid levels. Dang! I sure would like to get under the hood on that truck and see what makes it tick!

Well, as long as my two old vehicles keep running smoothly, and don't give me anymore trouble than the things I can fix myself, I guess I'll keep on changing their oil and filters, flushing their radiators every year, and replacing the batteries every couple of years. As soon as the weather cools here a little, I want to replace the brake lining on the rear wheels of my old 1978 Datsun truck. It has disk breaks on the front, and brake shoes on the rear.

Doing physical things around the house and property, and working on old machinery keeps me in good shape. The bending and crawling around in the dirt is something I enjoy.. I guess one could just add this enjoyment to my other weirdnesses...

I think that Crown has something against me. I must have insulted her at one time or another! xoxo david

My 1984 Crown Victoria is a nightmare for me to work on. All the wiring has been changed in it, and I never can find anything, and then I can't get my hands in to fix what I've found... It's such a beautiful car, but I just can't keep it running. xoxo david

You said it well. Another thing is how long it takes. One needs all kinds of tools, standard and metric. Under the hood, there is less space and more things in the way.
You know, it's really true about the time involved. A person could just about spend his entire live keeping a couple of cars and trucks up to snuff.. xoxo david
