A POEM--by David Stardust

CAN WE PUT THE TREE UP YET? (a poem by David Stardust)

She always loved the Christmas tree--
I bought for less than thirty bucks
at Walgreens, or Walmart-- some big box store.

It was only a little over two feet tall,
and when all the things in the box
were added to its plastic branches
even I had to admit it looked pretty cute.

So, when I was cleaning out the storage spot
above the hanging clothes in my closet,
and came across the tree in it's tight
sealed box-- like a fool---
I spent an hour and put it back together.

It's only the middle of July,
and it's been years since we spoke on the phone
just before they prepped her for the operation
and she calmly told me to go on with my life,
to go on without her..

I thought back on that last conversation
it was seven years ago, but each word,
every labored breath she took,
echoed in my mind.
"You know that little tree?
The one I always wanted you to put up early
for Christmas?"

"Sure," I said.

"Would you put it up for me tonight?"

"Sure," I said.

It was September that year when she died.
and I put the tree up that night,
and left it up for the whole year.

"We're born alone,
we live alone,
and we die alone," she always told me.
I knew what she meant, even though she and I
had been more together
than I'd ever been with any others.

Now, it's only the middle of July,
and it's been a long time since she passed,
but when I plugged in the power cord
and the small Light-Emitting-Diodes came on
blinking and sparkling the way she loved so much,

I felt like a fist hit me in the stomach.
The golden dome on the top of the little tree,
throbbed with light... Red, yellow, purple lights
jumped and pulsed through the plastic branches of the little tree.

"David, David, David, it's so beautiful-- so beautiful--"
Perhaps, I thought then, it's true,
we are alone,
but love rings through our minds and our spirits
and finds the place within us all that's never alone.
