I don't know if 50 Shades really represents a sea change. Usually what seems to happen is that as a subculture things starts to hit big in mainstream, either the subculture adapts or all of the n00bs start to notice negative consequences of going off half-cocked, so to speak.

Then, as THOSE stories start to go public, the scene gets stigmatized in a new way.

I haven't read the 50 shades books, but I'm willing to bet the phrase, "safe, sane, and consensual" doesn't appear there anywhere.

 I've always hated that whole "my kink is better than yours" attitude that some folks have... and how condescending they are to people they consider vanilla. Like if you don't identify as having some form of kink, then you're not in the cool group. So juvenile.

 And just to make it understood, "vanilla" is just a flavor, anyway; no better, no worse, than any other. Some just prefer other flavors. I hate that in some circles, it is used as a pejorative.
