Father, Dad, or what?
Father, Dad, or what?

I can appreciate the distance and time issue when one is not living close to their folks, but it is nice to remember once a year and set a day aside to celebrate or have a memory there. I do think that being a parent, father or mother, comes naturally once one gives it the opportunity and follows ones instinct and not always convention, many people make great parents without the inside or guidance of their own - but it's just a time to think maybe both for fathers and their offspring.

Happy Father's Day my friend....your Dad sounds amazing and I am sure you share many of his qualities. I hope your children are spoiling you today. My Dad is 22 years dead next month.....and I still miss him...for many years he was both Father and Mother to me. It is the strange thing about father's day (and mother's day) is that they are tinged with sadness and memories, but at least there are memories of those departed, I am lucky to have mine still around, but then it's more complex than that, but wrote about it elsewhere.

Happy Father's Day to you Gerk. Sure does make your parents special and wonderful! Father's Day is a celebration honoring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. Many countries celebrate it on the third Sunday of June, but it is also celebrated widely on other days. Many Canadians observe Father’s Day on the third Sunday of June. It is a day for people to show their appreciation for fathers and father figures. Father figures may include stepfathers, fathers-in-law, guardians (eg. foster parents), and family friends. I don't remember father's day growing up, but then I don't remember mother's day, but am sure that we did something. Mother's day is celebrated at different times, but at least we both celebrate father's day at the same time, which is less confusing. Although sometimes I think about dysfunctional families and parents who have separated and wonder if we should just have a "parents" day as many have taken on both roles... but then the kids would be looking for a "children's day" but I tell mine that it is Children's day 363 days a year....lol!

My own father is 92 this year and talking to him recently, we were chatting about the things we did like football games, watching parades, visiting museums and mountain climbing and having picnics, going for walks in the local parks, building campfires, building sand castles, playing on the beach, fishing, cooking beans and bacon, and just about anything a dad can think of... ... and I commented on how much he seemed so enjoy something (can't remember what but that is immaterial), and looking at me with that eye and smile he said "You think I did!" and laughing he explained that he wanted to give us the best experiences so we could see the world and choose the paths and things that interested us, not him. I think that that is what makes a parent wonderful!
