Tipping. Whats that all about anyway.

After reading a friends page and saying that if you cant afford a 20% tip maybe you shouldnt go out to eat, here comes the blog. There are 100s of jobs out there where people work with the public and service industry and tips arent an expectation. When I go out for a meal or get a haircut or whatever the adventure, why am I expected to "tip" you? You get a wage. I pay 3 fold what it costs for a meal at home. You take 20 minutes to cut my hair and charge $45 and want a tip? Even if you only get 1/2 that you still are making $40 bucks an hour. Why a tip? I wait on people all day and dont get tips. We arent even allowed to take things from clientele. Dont get me wrong. If I go out for a meal and have exceptional above average service I am one of the better tippers out there. Just dont expect a tip if you do a lousy job. IE I have to ask for water 4 times and still never get it. My order is wrong. Then there is the "built in" tip for parties over 8 people. We received our meal and never saw the waiter again. We all had to go up to the bar or counter to get our own drinks or ask for additional food items. So next time you bitch and whine about someone who leaves you a poor tip maybe you should look in the mirror and look at the care given to your guest. The majority of the GQ public work in areas that dont expect a tip for doing their job. Im really quite easy to please. Keep my drink glass 1/2 full and I am good to go. Water, coffee, Pop, whatever it is.

that is exactly what i have been trying to tell my wife! she always says you have to leave 20%. and she complains when i dont. its not my fault the server didnt do a good enough job to earn a 20% tip. if you know you are working for a tip might want to do a good job and earn the tip not just expect to get it.

Why do we even tip? Isnt it just part of their job to do this? There are plenty of positions out there where I go and get waited on and have a salesperson teach or are very educated on the product I buy and give me the honest ins and outs of the product. I dont tip that person. Still they are waiting on me and tending to my needs. I took my car in for service. They come to the door and open it. Tell me some basics, go and get me coffee of tea and take me to the lounge. I dont tip them. Am I suppose to?

I usually have a good experience when I eat out. I enjoy interacting with the waitress. I believe we live in a society together and sharing is part of that. I am not hurting for money, I usually tip well. I suppose the choice is yours.

Zippity, when you go make a purchase of a car for instance. You come across a salesman who is very knowledgeable about the vehicle, takes you on test drives, tosses in a couple free oil changes etc to make the buying experience easy....Do you tip them? Just curious. Just wonder how the tipping every came about. Lots of helpful people out there who serve me in one way or another. Wonder why tipping is expected in only certain jobs.

If a salesman offers good service, I buy from him even if he isn't the best price in town. Sales is about more than just price.
If you have not seen Reservoir Dogs, check it out. It's a pretty good movie. This scene in particular may appeal to you.

Lipgloss. I just dont get why certain people think they deserve a tip for doing their job. Many of us work in the service industry and dont expect tips. I wonder how that ever came about.

Dave. They question is why tip in the first place? My meal is already 4-5 times the price of what it would cost to prepare it at home. In that it should pay for the prep, the staff and then restaurant. I listen to wait staff bitch and moan about poor tipping. I should never have to ask for a drink...be it water, coffee or a cocktail. Its an automatic and the basic of basic service. That is just poor service.

If I go to a place more than a few times and the service is great I tip very well. If after a few times and the srvice has not improved then I will talk to the waiter or waitress aside a let them know when I fist get there I am going to offer $20 - $40 on top of the tip, however if I have to ask for anything of someting is wrong not only will that go down, but so will your tip.
