The Painting on the Wall
The Painting on the Wall Literally. The painting on my wall. When I was about 12 years old this painting showed up in the hallway across from my bedroom at dad's house. I was crazy... so that in itself was reason for me to love it. But the wild brush strokes and how "messy" it was but the violent strokes flowed into this gorgeous painting... I would literally stand in my bedroom doorway for hours just looking at it. OK... I admit I never timed it. May not have been "hours" at one time. Fast forward almost 15 years later: I was visiting dad at a newer home he'd moved to. And after years of standing and gazing at the painting above his mantle every time I visited I finally said it: "I love that painting" His reply: "Well, I should sure hope so! Since it's yours" Um... what? "I bought it for you. Why'd you think it hung outside your bedroom? I've been waiting all these years for you to get your own place large enough so you could take it home and get it out of here". I've been happily gazing at this painting in my own apartment for 10 years now. Thanks, seeingalt23 for your post Living with a Piece of ART ... and the request for my blog I'm gladly sharing. |

I love the story... you are lucky that it was unfolded to you finally... My grandfather used to tell me... that if you need or have to say something to someone, you had better do it... because you might not get the chance... He told me this the first time when I was about 8 years old... since that time, I've told people all kinds of things... One day, we had some relatives come visit... they were from the other side of the family and I had never met them... My brother had arranged for us to get free end-zone tix for a cowboys exhibition game... and, the way the seating worked out, a young relative sat next to me, Ralph... We talked about all kinds of things throughout the game... And, then, he says to me that he hates his life and he doesn't know what to do... I am not a doctor, but, I ask him what is the problem... So, his dad is an Annapolis graduate and was a commander of the submarine base in Hawaii, and was putting pressure on Ralph to go to the naval academy. Ralph was a very talented swimmer and had received interest from universities to go there, plus, he wanted to be a doctor... His heart was in his desire to follow his own path... So, he said he wanted to go to NC university, but, that the pressure was there... I asked him, what do you want to do... He said: 'I want to go to NC university, swim and study to be a doctor', and what should he do about it... I said (I had just met this kid) 'If you really felt that way, sit down and tell your parents how you feel, and why you feel that way'... But, that before you sit down with your parents, write out the pro's and con's for his decision... and, he should start out by saying how much he loved his parents, and thank them for the love and kindness that they had shown him... Years went by, and I had not heard from Ralph, still haven't heard from Ralph to this day... But, I did hear from his parents about 10 years after that conversation. We were vacationing in Galveston and his parents came thru Texas for a visit and stopped in to say hello. While there was a lot of commotion going on with a wonderful July vacation, they waited till there was a lull and asked to speak to me in private... My heart dropped, and instantly I remembered that long ago chat with Ralph... but, I said ok and we went outside.... They proceeded to thank me about the conversation that I had had with their son... they were so worried about the pressure he was under to go to the academy, but, didn't know how to handle it... when Ralph set them down a few days after my conversation with him, they were so relieved and happy that he had chosen his own way... They told me that Ralph had gone to North Carolina, became a doctor, got married and had young kids... what a life...
