Measure Twice, Cut Once.

Measure twice, cut once.

Or, if you're rearranging furniture (and space is a factor)... apparently it's measure THREE times, move once. I only measured twice. And "assumed" on the size of one item I didn't actually own yet when I planned this all out (my late uncle's electric fireplace - I "eyeballed" it).

Moved everything from my South wall to my North wall today, and I'm mighty happy with that (I created a "Hall Tree" out of 2 bookshelves and a hope chest. I've always wanted one of those). Then discovered my sofa apparently grew 2 feet in length (it's going against the now vacant South wall as soon as I figure this mess out and get men over to move it for me) and the Western wall in my living room shrank by 1 foot.

I've never really "rearranged" furniture in my living room before because everything was exactly in the only place it possibly could fit. Until I magically came up with a brilliant new idea last month. Apparently I need to get my money back haha.

I need more weekend.

Saturday evening I felt melancholia setting in, but... a solo Shakira Dance Party fixed that. I danced till 1am, then repeated this morning. I need to get a good collection of "Just can't sit still even if I wanted to!" music.

What music (genre/artist) makes you get up and dance?

Once my rearranging is done--if I'm able to work around the issues above--I'm going to have more than double the seating for guests, a window seat I've always wanted, and a nice area for dancing. Or exercise. Or cuddling in front of a fake fireplace (real is better but... it's what I have). And the aforementioned "Hall Tree". I'm so excited by the changes... if only I can make it WORK.

my mom and I both are usually quite good at this too I used to arrange furniture a few times a year just because. But even my mom had no ideas on this one... took YEARS to figure out this move. Except... obviously I was wrong haha.

Is that going to mess with the Feng shui? LOL

No dancing here ... to anything. Big clown feet aren't conducive to moving gracefully.

I like to think it will improve the feng shui

I have gotten rid of 2 bookshelves. A 3rd is going away except I discovered a problem... where do I put all the books? LOL.

Seriously though I have a plan....

You sure do a lot of furniture re-arranging! I worked with an old guy who liked every now and then to go out and tie one on. While he was out his wife would move the furniture around so he'd come home and try to sneak in and trip over the stuff.
You oughta just put wheels on that stuff. Then, you could motorize it and get a remote control and vroom vroom around the living room with the sofa. And, just like in Naked Lunch and quantum physics, nothing would ever stay the same. It would be in constant flux like the sub atomic world. Even cooler if you could figure out how you could get it to flit in and out of existence- a flickering Barcalounger and floor lamp. It WOULD make curling up with the Sunday paper kind of a pain in the ass though. And boiling eggs! That could take hours!

hahaha

That would be awesome remote control and flick in and out of existence... hmmm. Actually that would solve my "where should I put it?" problem. Bring items in and out of existence as needed that particular day. lol.

What is a hall tree? Will you post pictures?

Regarding having to move: I think it's more of a song-by-song basis than a specific group, although the Talking Heads and most Motown tend to make me want to move... but specific songs? "Come out and Play (Keep 'em Separated) by The Offspring makes me want to flail uncontrollably, and The Ramones make me want to pogo...

Here's a nice example of a hall tree.

Basically: a bench seat with or without storage (usually with) and a high back with hooks for coats etc and sometimes with cool spots to hold umbrellas on the sides. They were popular in Victorian homes I believe. I honestly didn't know they still made them till just now - I've only ever seen them at Antique shops. Mine's a Mock Hall Tree because I stuck my hope chest between two bookshelves and will either attach hooks to the bookshelves (I have brick walls and I'm not really supposed to put holes in them) or put a tension rod between them to hold things.

Well... if nothing else I finally have the "hall tree" area I've always wanted by the door. The rest is... um... Well, I don't really use that kind of language lol.

I'm starting to think ... hmm. Nevermind.

My plan for tonight: Glare at the furniture. Glare at the walls. Eat pizza. Maybe measure a few more times and glare at the tape measure. I've pretty much decided that's my only plan for tonight.

Not much on furniture moving...

But, here are some songs that motivate the feet:

Kenny Loggins - 'Foot Loose'

Paper Tongues - 'Ride to California'

Jill Scott - 'Crown Royal'

Janelle Monae - 'Tightrope'

just sayin'...

I have the perfect spot in my house for a hall tree just like the one you posted a picture of, but I have been unable to find anything that i really liked until you posted this picture. It is EXACTLY what I have been looking for!! Of course, I will never be able to find anything like this now!!

How did your rearrangement project go? Still have your dancing area? I would love to sit back and watch you dance.

Are you a DIY'er? Find an old hope chest at a 2nd hand store or yard sale, and an old door (remove the knob... you'd have to google what to do about the hole left behind), sand, stain, finish... hook them together however you're supposed to hook wood together (screw them together? Partial holes and wooden pegs and wood glue? Both??) screw some decorative hooks in and hang a mirror... viola. The holders on the ends for umbrellas etc I'm not too sure about. Though if you don't mind squarish there are wooden magazine holders at 2nd hand stores all the time that I'm sure could be re-purposed.

Or check out antique shops. Or copy the photo and go.ogle search it and I thought this exact one was being sold somewhere.
